Default 85.5 944 runs, quits, runs, quits, etc

While driving my 85.5 944 this morning, I got about 5 blocks from the house when the engine died and would not restart. About 30 min, later, while waiting on AAA, I decided to try to start the engine again and it started. However, it only ran for about 200 yards and died again. (I then found 3 construction guys who pushed me the remaining 3 1/2 blocks back to my house.)

I would appreciate some diagnostic help. While sitting in the car, I heard noises from the fuel pump area when there was power to the car. I have already jumpered the alarm module a couple of months ago when that became an issue.

DME relay? DME? Fuel pump? Fuel rail (there was a small smell of gas in the engine area)?

Thanks.

it's a ~$60 part that will cost $3,500 for NASA to troubleshoot.
