Thanks - I got a message back from the supplier today. Apparently my compressor has:

Denso ND8 oil which is compatible with PAG46.

Does this mean i need to dump out and buy new oil?

Since you had ester oil in the system you need to find out if ND8 is compatible with ester. If it were mine I would empty the compressor and put 8oz of ester oil in.

"Denso ND8", aka Denso ND-Oil 8 is PAG46.

In case this is useful here is the instructions Denso gave me in the box.

In terms of my lubricant, I'm unsure if the oil in my new compressor is compatible with the existing stuff. My sticker from the p/o who did the converstion says ester oil is in there at the moment.

My new compressor has PAG 46. I've tried to find out if they are compatible, one is synthetic on isn't i think, but not sure if I can combine.
Does anyone know please?

There is Mineral oil, originally used with R12.
There is Ester and Pag design for R134a.

Some OEM's or compressor mfg's prefer Pag,
some prefer ester.

The rule of thumb (and some may not agree or you will stories
otherwise) is:
You can mix ester with mineral, not pag with ester and not pag wtih mineral.

When converting an old R12 system with mineral you can mix ester.

How I'd love this written more clearly, or in my s/h! The writing at the bottom starts with an 'E' which is why I presumed ester initially.

Sorry to keep asking questions, I'm struggling to get my head around this having compared the compressor on my car to the new one. I've not done this type of job before so I'm a bit of a novice to this.

I can easily see my compressor without jacking my car looking through the left wheel arch.

Here are the photos of the new Denso reman unit i got. I took one of the covers off to inspect, but i can't really see where the refrigerant lines go on. I've got a bit worried I've got the wrong part. (see images attached)

The one on my car (1987 turbo) looks like the one in this link.

I take it the 'service valve' comes off my old unit, and I remove those shipping places and pop that on?

I think you have the wrong compressor also. I don't see how the lines will fit. You need a Nippondenso 10P15E for a late 944. What model did you get?

austin,

remove the manifold from your compressor and place it on the replacement compressor, torque the 6 mm allens to 18 lbs

Awesome will do thanks.
I'm going to tackle this in the next few days, hope to do it in under 2 hours.

My compressor I bought is a Denso 471-0127

I'm going to the garage tuesday to get the remaining refrigerant sucked out and hopefully will get the all clear that there are no leaks in the system.

That is the correct one. Looking at your compressor I did not realize you had not put the manifold on. I was trying to figure out how the hoses would fit and didn't see anyway they would. Glad Griffith's posted to clarify what you needed to do.

Thanks Charlie, that was my worry, I didn't want to get the old one off then realise my mistake. Thanks to you both for helping, the advice is invaluable. I'm glad to be doing this job myself and I've learnt a lot in the process.
