944 S2 won´t go into fifth gear at high speeds
I have a 944 S2 witch won´t go into fifth gear at high speeds(60-70 mph and above). It´s possible to push it into the gear if you use enough force, but if you do that it makes a loud grinding sound when you engage the gear. The gear works perfect in lower/moderate speeds. All other gears works perfectly. The tranny oil will be changed very soon.
Any ideas?

Broken fifth gear synchro is where I'd start. Any issue engaging reverse gear? They share a shift control rod inside the transmission.

It may be difficult to engage reverse sometimes yeah(does not happen often). Seems like this is way above mye repair skills. Do you think this will be an expensive job for a workshop?

Depending on where you go, you're looking at 1 1/2 hour just to remove the transaxle by competent and knowledgeable mechanics. At the dealership: $120 per hour an up. If you have the ability, you can do it yourself and then take it to a shop or find a replacement on line or craigslist. There's two used ones here in SW Florida. If yours is an LSD, make sure the code is 5R vs 5P. The LSD units have been going for upwards of $1500 to $2500.

Luckily dropping the transmission on our cars isn't that bad...you can definitely DIY that part. You can also get to the the 5th gear synchro without taking apart the entire transmission. Just got to remove the rubber seal on the back, remove the rear cover, and use some basic tools like a puller and a punch and the entire 5th gear assembly comes off. Worth a shot before you send it out. That also gives you a chance to inspect the shift rod.

I suspect the shift control rod(see post nr 2), and not the synchro? Or may be both, i don´t know? Because the car have issues with the reverse(very rare) and the fifth gear. Do you think it´s possible to take out the tranny if you lift the car with a jack? This is my second car, have som decent experience from motorcycle repairing, but no car repair experience..

+1 to checking this just as good practice- I'm pretty sure the reason the 3rd and 4th gear synchros on my transmission are shot is because the shift pin was horribly worn to the point that you were basically missing the actual location of the gears in trying to shift.
