I tell you what. I'll compare my dad's '74 911 to my '84 944, once I'm done sorting his car out some. But the 911 wins the nostalgia battle, every time.

Oh yeah, I paid $6k for my 944 with 52k miles on the P-car. An 83 911 of similar miles and condition would have cost me, what? $50+ grand right now. So, I think the 911 is outstanding, but, the market value is just too much for me. Overall, when I compare the two with fun factor and price. Their is no competition right now. The 944 is the better "bang for the buck" and I don't think you are buying a "throw away car" like I have read on some posts. I have had this car for two or three years and have put on about 4k trouble free miles and it sounds and performs great and it is great fun on the twisty mountain roads.

I'd want a slantnose aka flachbau. Never liked the frog eyes too much.

Interesting article and amazing what 6 years can do to car prices. He quotes 6k and 12k for the 944 and the 911 respectively. Aircooleds have gone throught the roof and so those figures are way out now.
If I was going to add a car, as much as I would love a 911, I would probably go a cayman first, and then a 911. I guess the 944(turbo in my case) is a better car for me and what I want out of a car. I love the handling and that it is more drivable on the edge of its envelope, and more forgiving too. I love the lag and of course the boost. I love the gear box, as mine is very precise, the feel of the brakes, the seating position, the way my hand just drops on to the gear leaver and so much more. The hips in the mirror, the reactions it gets.
I also understand that a 911 owner will have a similar list too, and in a perfect world I'd have both. I am happy for 911 owners to have the same love for their cars as I have for mine and I can say without doubt, all of us look back everytime we walk away from our babies. For me that is what it is all about. Whether a 911 floats your boat or a 944 or a cayman etc, it really doesn't matter as there is no best, only what's best for you. If you ain't looking back when you walk away you just bought a car

I think the 911 looks better than the 944. Not trying to offend anyone but for me the 944 is just a 924 on steroids...while i like the elegant yet sporty lines of the 924 the 944 is a bit too rude for my tastes but not pulling its weight for the money it eats. The 924 CGT/GTS/GTR are as far as i go from the 924 body and its form follows function...do the 944 rear hips really need to be that tall?
Now...the air cooled 911s also sound better to me...i've had a 993 on my hands for a while and that flat6 is what i want to hear all the time.
Clearly the 944 is easier and safer to drive, i have driven an 86' a few times...its more practical and cheaper than a 911...but to be honest how many times do you carry 4 wheels in your sports car that you absolutely need a 944 instead of a 911? You can go on holiday with your gf/wife with a 911 for sure.
For me its a no brainer, 911 over 944 any time. The 924 has a special place in my heart and it has earned it, for me, by being just as fun and as good as the 944 but cheaper and better looking(ROW 924s do look infinitely better than US 924s)...i'm not really interested in 0-60 times as i get no fun from racing in a straight line..especially in a Porsche.

For me it is definitely 944, I was buying 944s when 911s were cheap and I could afford it then instead of multiple 944s but I always had a thing for 944. The only drawback is they are slow. Hence 3.0 turbo need
911 sounds very good but I like bmw open 6cylinder sound better. 944's generally sound tame but there are some exceptions. (targa tasmania S2 sounds very good for instance..)

Burning Brakes
(Yes, two 7x16 and two 8x16 Fuchs, luggage, jack, tool box, and some spares...all inside a 911SC with its full interior!)
The pile that came out is bigger than the car...
