S is 10.9:1 same as s2 also same as the 89 944 (according to carpoint.com which has a .2 Litter advantage on the S) but is ranked alot lower in HP... I guess the 16valve head makes all the diffrence..

Ok, A while back this was asked. I discovered in that thread that it was to be 87 for NA cars, which I have. In that thread I was directed to racer X's web site. There is a complete breakdown on octains. I ran 92 for about 2 years cause I misinterpeted the gas door rating for American octane. I also was fighting a fuelish smelling oil.. Have in previous cars also.. Believed in drive your car clean.(nothing cleans it better then raw gas). What I found in the article in racer X's web site is that. If your car is programmed to run 87 octane. ANd you run higher, your engine goes into a retarded state of running because you can not burn off all of the raw fuel and the O2 sensor sees this. and leans out the injectors. gas mileage goes up but power suffers.. Upon learning this. I changed out my oil,(again), filter fuelfilter and O2 sensor.. most likley I have damaged my cat converter from trying to absorb all the excess fuel. this was like 5-6 weeks ago.. results. I have more power now less gas mileage.. but for the first time my oil is holding up.. normaly I would be changing my oil this weekend. but I don't need to. It smells OK. and it still has good viscocity. I though have developed a balance shaft leak and will do belts and a seal change instead. I think this was caused from having thined out oil a lot of the time.... This is mostly my opinion but take it for what I have reported..If you have a chip or shaved head, or turbo, or S. or s2. those require Higher Octane. and are fine with it cause the engine is tuned for it.. but just a plain ole NA 87 is the best.. My best results have been with sunoco. My 2 cents.

Wow.. maybe one of us has a mis-printed manual! Sure to sell for thousands on e-bay! 
Any other '89 944 manuals out there? Lets try to firgure this out.
I could see how it would make sense for the two to have diff octanes!
