This is going to sound weird, but bear with me. Get an old - like late seveties or eighties - Volvo 240 series. Dirt cheap, RWD, and only the manuls have survived. These things are unkillable and fairly cheap to maintain, so you can save up for the Porsche.

The fun? Volvo rallied this platform with success. The high-ish seating position and kinda soft suspension will make it feel a little wierd to push through corners. Once you get used to this, you'll find its a surprisingly capable car that doesn't deserve its boring family-wagon reputation. If you can, find an early 80's turbo model.

GTI is just the slightly hotter version of the Golf, not RWD....

84 or 85 rx7 gsl se is the best buy for the money from what I have experienced. 13b engine with lsd and 4 wheel discs with low gearing and a super light chassis. I loved the 1st gen rx7s. They are very tossable and gets decent power. A big street port with headers with downdraft carbs can get you about 170 to 180 hp. I had a friend who built a rx2 from a junkyard motor that did 12s at the dragstrip normally aspirated. I don't know what the rx7 will do with a modified 13b but it is definitely fast enough to get you in trouble and handles very well and even more tossable than the 944 due to its weight and size. Test drive one and see for yourself.

I should sell my 85.5 NA It has about 140K on it. Runs beautifully, no leaks, faded red paint, dents, consumes oil, yet no leaks or noticable smoke. Shifts beautifully, clutch seems fine although I never changed it in the 6 years I have it. Runs cool, new radiator a few years ago. New injectors. Basically the car just looks like hell. The car is in Queens. Does $2K sound good? Email me at PorscheTurboNY@aol.com if you have any questions.

I'd go for any Mk2 Jetta/Golf, but try to get one with a clean body.
