i'm a bit extra snarky today. believe it or not, our DME's weren't a problem when these cars were new (my first P-car was a slightly used '87S 25 years ago). ran it to 116 k miles and never even heard of DME issues... since then, i've come to accept the latter day cause of DME failures is directly related to voltage irregularity/s that weaken and burn them out... one example are those cars with alarms, after years of water infiltration causing them to short out, surge, etc, killing the canary.
it's always good to carry a spare DME, dist cap and rotor.

Proud of you for not telling OP for go v8
but yes, in 944-land it's normal to replace a bad Motronic part with one that's just as old, and hope that keeps it running. I don't think you can even get a new DME besides the awesome Rogue one, and nobody is paying $800+ for a new AFM.

Despite the reputation, or more likely in favor of it, my 944 is one hell of a beast and is quite a reliable car. It's been that way for years. Not many people bother to post that, though.

I agree. The way I've been able to have a reliable 944 is to go through it and update all the vulnerable components up front so I don't have to worry about them later. This is my fourth and first turbo version.

Mine has also been very reliable, it only left me stranded twice. One was the classic DME relay, 20 minutes after I bought the car. Should have had the foresight to have a spare. Second time was the ring & pinion crapped the bed while I was gently accelerating in 3rd. Whoops. But I had my fair share of Motronic related no-starts because of bad connections, bad quality aftermarket replacement sensors, and old electronics acting like old electronics.

My 944 was incredibly reliable. i changed the oil and a fan relay in 99 k miles of driving from 17k to 116k.
A BIT OVERDUE for a timing belt (LOL) when i ran out of oil (Halloween 1994).
i kept forgetting to top off for like a month straight.
i was working a job 70 miles away, and i had my mind on other stuff and including coming home to this macking babe.....
still no excuse. i really abused that car not changing the timing belts for 1 million miles.
real bad at the end with that long commute and not topping the oil (or for that matter, changing it).
