Default Has anyone removed factory undercoating?

I noticed when I was doing my alignment how easy it came off and how thick it was. If anyone has done this, was there be a noticeable difference in weight if it was removed? What can't be made up in power on a budget can be made up in weight . My car never sees rain, but I would get some of the spray on undercoat from Autozone or Advance Auto just in case.

If it's coming off easy, it's probably time for a job. No doubt you can find a more effective material all these years later.

It is an absolute royal pain to get it off.

My car doesn't have any, but it came from the factory that way.

There's an article in this month's Speed News on using dry ice and a torch to remove it. Page 14

Or move to Wisconsin, wait for a cold February morning when it's -20, and just hit it with a hammer.

That was actually how I did my interior, and it actually worked somewhat well. I bought the cheapest putty knife I could at Harbor Freight. Heated both the knife and the material and it came up like butter. Now its time to remove all of the residue it left to get ready for paint

Do you have a Cup car? They don't come with any sound deadening.

I heard that a lot of wieght is in sound deadening on these cars. I believe I've read somewhere between 200 to 300 lbs through out the whole car. That would make a difference on the track.

Call it a pre-cup car. Ordered for the Firehawk series, no sunroof, no undercoating, the only options are sport shocks and limited slip.

Dear Stig: Are you going to paint it with POR15, or just spray it some rustoleum color. I'll have to check my floorboards this weekend and see what solvent can crack the residue. Brake cleaner?

I was planning on doing Rustoleum. But that is a long ways away from now... I'm getting the car prepped for a weld in cage

It is a major effort to remove. Heat and a putty knife, wire wheel on a drill, etc. Nothing easy.

And hard to get access unless the tub is stripped.

Probably not worth the work, for the nominal weight loss.

Dear Stig..Don't forget to do the bottomside where the weld-in points for the cage are going to go..don't need a fire down there and ruin everything..brake/fuel lines, for instance?
