Default a few questions about engine parts on a 951

Guys,

I am going through my engine piece by piece and replacing hoses, vacuum lines, gaskets, screws, clamps, etc....

1. I am looking at replacing these nuts/washers (circled in blue):

2. I am also looking to replace the gaskets on this (circled in blue):

3. Lastly, I am looking to open this up... to clean up the plate, replace the gasket (if any), and replace those old bolts:
<a href='http://postimg.org/image/67ba78efn/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s13.postimg.org/67ba78efn/Screenshot_2015_12_06_18_49_06.jpg' border='0' alt="Screenshot 2015 12 06 18 49 06" /></a>

Question is ---

for #1 above --- please confirm that item #18 and #19 refer to the proper washer/nut I am looking to replace. Also, any idea on what the correct torque is?

for #2 above --- please confirm that #21 and #23 refer to the proper gaskets I am looking to replace. Also, any idea on what the correct torque is?

for #3 above --- for some reason I am not able to find an exploded view that shows that cover/screws, etc. Does anyone know if I can simply take out all those bolts that I have identified and remove it? I assume there is a valve-cover like gasket. Could someone please provide a part number"

Handful of questions --- but I so very very much appreciate everyone's help

Thank you,
Paul

It's a little hard to tell for me. Do you have any other diagrams and pictures to compare?

questions 1 and 2 - yes those are the items you found on the diagram.

question 3...don't bother, that is the balance shaft housing, it is sealed to the block with a special loctite as well as o rings at the ends...just clean the bolt heads

Picture 1 are the cylinder head bolts. If you release the tension on those, you need to remove the head entirely, replace the head gasket and torque the bolts down in the proper sequence to the proper torque. To get the head off, you have to remove the timing belt, so you might as well do that job too, plus the water pump, oil pump drive gear, and front-end balance shaft seals. You'll also need to replace the cam tower gasket and intake manifold gaskets, because you'll have to take those off.

In picture 2, there are 2 gaskets there. If they're not leaking, why replace them? If you remove the head, you'll *have* to replace them - so add them to your parts list. (Or order the whole head gasket kit, and it'll come with them.)

As Spencer said, that's the balance shaft housing. There is another one on the other side. If you're going to remove the head to replace those dirty nuts, you'll have easier access to the other balance shaft housing. You might have to take the turbo off. In which case you'll need new exhaust cross-over, downtube and wastegate gaskets. And, if you're going through all that work to freshen up the front and top end of the engine, I suggest you also pull the oil pan and replace the rod bearings. Actually, once you're that far into the project, you'd actually save time by pulling the whole engine so you can work on it easier on an engine stand. Add a clutch kit, throwout bearing guide tube, pilot bearing and rear main seal to your parts list.
