924s look great in two tone combinations. The 2L engine is not notorious for failing head gaskets but if you have a cooling issue the gasket will fail eventually.
In any case, many times you can get away without any machining and just replace the headgasket which is quite inexpensive. (loving the 924 for that )
You have some super rare items on that 924 except itself as a 77 in such good condition and a two tone paint scheme
-left mirror at least is original 77 equipment(i think the car might have come out of the factory without a right one and somebody added one later)
-that rear hatch without a spoiler or wiper is also quite rare(do i see no strut on the right side? you have to take good care of this hatch so it does not delaminate...so no side pushing closing please)
-early front wings without side repeaters
-no sunroof model which are rare
-being an early car it probably has the dolomite grey dash instead of the black one used on later cars...the early dash cracks less(if not kept for years in the sun)
-that arm rest is the early rare version

This IS a sunroof model (unfortunately). You are probably correct about the rhs mirror... there is a note on the "repairs" list about installing a used mirror.
-What is this you say about the front wings?

Your wings appear normal for a US car. My 78 had a drivers mirror only but it was the standard electric one, not the older style manual one you have. I agree about your pax mirror being a late addition.

"As discussed elsewhere, the 924 had unfortunately suffered from an image problem right from the early days, and it was only Porsche decided to take it racing that the image began to dissipate"

Front wings are the correct ones so the original ones. Later(81 onwards) wings are a bit different as they have another square side repeater..you cant find early ones so ofthen anymore....so they are rare
I have been looking for a pair of 924 turbo early front wings for my...early 924 turbo but could not find any...yes the 924 turbo wings are again a bit different from the NA ones.
late 924
my early two tone 924 turbo (notice no square side repeater)

Theory: When rebuilding the TT, they installed the bearing in the exact place where one of the shifter mounting bolts go. This bolt pressed into the bearing & the damaged bearing destroyed the driveshaft.
Good news is the spring centred Sachs clutch disk looks new.
Bad news is the TT & bellhousing needs replacement.

Are you going to replace the pilot bearing as well? The snout of the shaft may have damaged it, if there were extreme enough forces/cycles on the shaft to cause it to fail in shear like that. I don't think it failed in torsion, generally the failure propagation is at 45 degrees like this 930 axle if it failed in torsion:
I think your assessment about fatigue is spot on.
