door speakers done
Replaced my front door speakers. Based on others on this forum I went with Alpine SPS-406's. Sound is good (especially for the price). The fit is almost like stock... the tweeter sticks out a bit far and presses against the grill... took a bit of persuasion to get the grills to snap back on. As you can see below, i think the old speakers were due for a replacement. :-)

I installed pioneers in my doors. took lots of metal cutting and different screw assemblies to get them in..haven't tried them yet, but they are a lot better than the holey ones that were in there. They stick out a bit from the doors, and are angled back toward the cabin occupants. OK unless you stick your foot in them. Grilles won't work. Hoping for the best.

I installed Polk speakers in my own car's front doors a couple years ago. You can search this list for the thread, where someone recommended a model that fits well. Even so, it was a fiddle to get everything together and the grill to seat flush to the interior panel.

When I installed the Alpine SPS-406's in my car I had no problems, but the speakers I replaced were not the original stock and has some 1/4" plastic spacers that made the grills fit like stock. For the money I don't think you could get much better sound.

I should have noted that I grinded down the plastic 'rims' around the holes of the plastic frame that goes under the speaker's 4 hole/arms. This moves the speaker away from the grill just a bit (maybe 1mm) and helps the fit.

I used that exact speaker. I ended up 3d printing a grill spacer I designed and it worked great. Here's the thingiverse link if anyone wants to print their own:
