Default Almost Lost it

ok while changing the oil for our Trip to Lake Champlain VT this week in the 944 I found the Power Steering Adjustment bolt broken and the main bolt that holds it to the body, broken also (or so I thought), dam lucky to have found it this way and not if it broke off and the power steering pump just flew out into every think. Ok so the only thing holding the power steering to the body was the one "Stud" no nut, no nothing as the adjuster set is also the broken. The Stud and washer on the left is missing on the right, both go back into the tabs in the back, so I am missing the stud on the right, spacer on the right and nut and washers on both sides and a comleete new Adjuster bolts set up

i once worked on a car that had been driven probably 20,000 miles with the pump just hanging from the stud, without the belt of course.

good catch though!

It seems the PS pumps have a tendency to lose the mounting hardware if you drive them in the upper register frequently. Seems even more prevalent on the 3L cars. A good friend has an S2 that hits 7k more or less every single time he drives it and it's had significant issues with the PS mount. He did some research on the issue and it appears Porsche recognized this problem on the Firehawk race cars and omitted PS to rectify the problem.

How does that go? You may own a 944 if...you never really liked power steering anyway...

This is just one if the reasons to do without it.

Mine broke off just like that somewhere on a round trip between Fort Myers, FL and Orlando. I didn't notice it until I was under the car for something totally unrelated.

I do not think it has anything to do with the operating rev range but has everything to do with improper belt tensioning procedure, bending and breaking the stuff that was not loosened properly and the stuff that was not tightened properly falling off eventually.

The turnbuckles have so much leverage they can bend and break the strut and the ears and the mounting hardware without even feeling very tight.
