Default Audiophiles....

I am thinking about upgrading my sound system a little. I think the biggest problem will be the front 4x6s. What I was thinking was getting a good shallow 4" component set. I should make a 4x6 plate to bolt to the stock location and cover it with tan vinyl to match the door. Then I could put the 4" in there and move it back slightly so the dash wouldnt hit the grill. You could either paint the grill tan for a lower profile or leave it black, as I have a black & tan interior. I would likely leave the stock baffle in there to act as an enclosure. The crossovers could go in the door and the tweeter could either be flushed into the same plate or above the power window switches.

In the back I will likely leave the stock speakers. Later I will probably add an 8" sub. I have an Infinity Beta 8 and 10" now. I also have an Infinity Kappa 4" component set now. I may run all 4 speakers off the head unit and the sub off an amp. I have a SoundStream Lil Wonder now. Has anybody put a 3 way component system like offered by Focal or MB Quart in our cars? I don't think the 6.5"s would give me enough bass, though.

What other brands do you recommend looking at? Mainly for the shallow mount 4" component set up front. Thanks.

I am not sure if they make this speaker anymore but the BEST accurate bass I got out of anything up to 6 1/2 inch is the Nakamichi sp50 5 1/4 inch midranges. They are sweet all the way down to 80 hertz, which is better than most woofers I seen. It won't be very loud, but its very accurate if you listen to good music with vocal and non powered instruments like classical or jazz. For rock and rap, use some fosgates or heavy duty speakers since accuracy is not really the main issue.

Actually for good base try a JL Audio unit. I have had numerous subs and the quality of their components is top notch. The RF stuff is junk and belongs only in Bubba's chevy truck or 5.0.

For a more comparative review the Rockford units are very "thumpy" while the JL subs tend to be much more clean and clear. Any good sound shop will have both to listen to.

I've got the MB Quart 6.5" in the back in my 87. I love em! Great bass from such average size speakers. I went with infinity perfect 4x6's up front. My alpine deck has just enough power to push the MB Quarts, but I would definitely recommend a sub for them. Clear sound and typical soft MB Quart tweeter.

I will look into that Nakamichi 5.25" I know they do make good product.

Rockford also makes some good stuff. They have different grades, but thier top of the line speakers and amps are just that. I think you are speaking of a JL sub. I know they are good, but I don't know if they make front speakers that will fit. Last time I saw one of thier 5.25" sets, they were very deep mount.

I think MB Quart or Infinity might have some that would work. I could fit my Infinity 4" set now. They have a new slim line (along with JBL) that looks good. They have the larger cone, as well.

Keep any ideas or install pics coming.

One quick note....in regards to the front speakers...the infiniti's were a bit too wide for the stock door opening. It wasn't the depth, bu the actual speaker housing that was too wide. Some creative work with a grinder made short work of the install!

Real men aren't afraid to take a grinder to their porsche!!! Ha ha haa

I took an air grinder with a cutoff wheel and chopped a lot of that metal out, to clear my custom door pods - really works well.

Pics, Sam?

My Infinity 4" were also too wide. The depth of 1 7/8" was okay, but they would not quite sit flush.

I'm away from the car until Thanksgiving or Christmas - I will take pics and post them up then, I've had a lot of people ask me for pics.

Sam has the best idea yet. If you don't mind cutting holes in your door panel and door, forget the 4x6 idea or the "slim line" anything because they won't sound good most likely. They do make mounts where the speaker sticks out so the magnet will not hit the door glass or the window mechanisms. Lots of the good midranges have big magnets, though some of the tweeters have rare earth cobalt magnets and are EXTREMELY strong and tiny. I had 2 small pieces come together pinching the skin on my finger causing bleeding under the skin : ( I have spare doors and door panels so I can pretty much do whatever I want.... still I wouldn't want to cut into the turbo S door. The turbo S setup is interestingly good though for stock.

I have the cheapo 944na, but I would like to be able to retrn to stock. I am not looking for bass out of the front doors, so you should be able to get one of many 4" component sets in there. You could do kickpanel speakers if you were trying to get bass up front. I know the theory of wqualizing the distance from your ears to the speakers, but kickpanels pull your soundstage too low from my past experience.

The problem was my sub and box was too heavy and before I had only 2 cars and had to take the box out to haul stuff. The weight of the box and amps was causing irregular wear in the inside of the tires so I often drove without the box. Its the reason why I loved my mid/tweet combination and a flick of the electronic crossover, I had a 2 way separate system instead of 3 way with subs.

BTW, good quality heavy box built with proper specifications and volume for the speaker weighs a lot.... almost 100 pounds with the amps.
