Default What would it take to get a 968 wing on to my '44?

Hi rennlist-

I just picked up a stock 968 wing for a reasonable price, and I was wondering (obviously) what it would take to get it on to the back of my '87 944. I've heard they both will and won't bolt on with some work. I'm not afraid to invest some time in the project, but don't want to come out of it with a sh**ty fitment. Advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

If you have it at hand I'd suggest you try to match it up and see if it fits nicely first.

did it come with all rubber seals and what not? all side pieces, brakelight etc...as those can get very expensive. I picked up the 4 main pieces for 550 then spent a boatload sourcing the brakelight and all rubber pieces and seals needed. A body shop put mine on for 140 bucks and they said it wasnt fun.

Hey - if you decide to ditch because of the effort, let me know, I've got a 968 hatch that needs a wing (and trim pieces).

The lower trim pieces mount to the same places as the stock 944 wing, and you should be able to resuse the hardware, though the bolts are difficult to remove, you can modify a flathead screw driver to work a little better... take a look at the bolts.

Then once the bottom pices are in place the upper piece can be mounted.

Send me an email and I can try and give you better, more detailed instructions.

Now that Savage mentions the modified screwdriver trick, is there a tool specifically made for removing those weird nuts?

Bad news I am afraid - The 968 wing will not fit 944 87 hatch without modification - welding some bits on = pain in the neck job!

The late 90 944's and 968 have an additional 2 or 3 mount points at the bottom of the hatch than pre 90 cars. Get a post 90 or 968 hatch. The alternative is to buy replica wing.

Yeah, my 968 hatch has extra flat tabs in heavy guage steel for mounting of that stuff.

Hmmm..

I've gotta see if I can talk the previous owner of the piece into including the trim with it. If not, I've got no clue where I would get it except straight from Porsche, and we all know what that mean$$$... Anyone have the part #s of the pieces I need just so I can check into em?

On the subject of the extra tab(s)..It seems that it would be easier to take the hatch to a welder and have him put a tab or two on there than to buy a whole new 968 hatch. Anyone have a reason why not?

Leadfoot- I'm in Tennessee for a week, I'll give you a call early next week and we'll definitely meet up.

Thanks everyone!
Ian

Well during my research I came across a few 944 with the 968 wing mounted to lemans extended style Hatch wing, its bigger and usaully fiberglas, little more rigid and might work. Not really sure if you want to go that route.

The pieces from porsche, the lower setup with hardware, not the wing mind you just the lower pieces are more than you want to know. I dont have the parts numbers, but I seem to remember was in the hundreds. Something insane. You might check with any company that sells the wings, they might sell you just the lower section.

I know Tom Pultz has the prices/part numbers. I may have them somewhere.-Ill check tommorow. The 3rd brakelight was 230, one seal was 140, you need two others at like 40-60 bucks, by the time I had my $500 968 wing all pieced together, painted, and installed it was over 1,100. (Paint and install was 240) I could have bought a whole 968 hatch!

It´s not a 968 wing. It first came on the 951 90. =)

Any word Sam?

I wouldn't mind paying for the seals, but I don't think there's a brakelight on the wing (?) Picture wasn't too clear but I guess I'll see once it gets here.

Anybody wanna guess the fair market value of a 968 wing, just in case?

Thanks,
Ian
