That's gotta be a 4-channel amp; looks like four RCA's going into it. I suppose the green wires are speaker wires?
A new head unit should be plug and play as long as it has the same number (four, probably) of RCA pre-outs as the one you're taking out. You may need a different wiring harness adapter if you don't want to cut and splice wires.

OK, I'm a little confused. It says "4x60 watts", so it must be a 4 channel amp, right? If there are only 4 wires doesn't that mean 2 are input and 2 are output. Is that what a 4 channel amp is? If it had 2 wires wouldn't that mean it couldn't be stereo since there was one input and one output without a separate right and left?
(I told you I know very little about car audio)

It is a 4chan (I said before it was 2chan) all of the RCA's are inputs, front and rear, left and right for each. Output to the speakers are probably the green wires grouped with the RCA's

a ha, I see.
So if I'm looking at a unit like this one for example:
http://www.epinions.com/613434_Alpin...ay_~full_specs
Will it work with my amp? It says it has a built-in power amp that outputs 4 x 45 watts peak. Would I just want to take those outs and run them to my amp, or do I need a unit that does not include a built in amp? Or are there also outputs from the stereo that don't use the built in amp?

I believe every head unit has an internal amp, this is how they drive the speakers without the need for an external amp. Amps help out when you want to output more power to the speakers. Some also have built-in equalizers and crossovers. My head unit (Alpine 7894) has the option of turning off the internal amp since it's not used if you have an external one. Check this site out, car audio electronics...

just updated my stereo last winter and this is by far the best set-up
a GOOD (blaupunkt in mine) in dash cd unit with at least 45-50 watts (not an inflated rating either) install a powered sub with adjustable level. i found that in my 89 s2 the factory front and rear speakers handle and put out all i need without distoriton. the sub really takes over the load on the factory speakers, low freq drivers need more power than the high drivers.
the sub i have is a 6" "bazooka" type that tucks in nicely next to the rear wheelwell. it still leaves room in back for anything i might need to carry.
since you already have the amp installed, i'd leave it and use it with whatever you install. listen to all the others advise about fuses and make sure you have GOOD ground connections. you should never skimp on the wiring!
good luck and have fun!
