Motor Oil

I ran Mobil 1 15w-50, but now run Amsoil HP 10w-40. I seen at Advanced Auto Parts (not sure how big the chain is, but I prefer them over Auto Zone any day) Mobil 1 for $4.28/qt everyday...they even had the Europena formula 0w-40 for the same price. What is Wally world up to now? I remember buying like 6 jugs of the stuff for ~ $17.88, but that was a year ago. I used Castrol Synetc once and did not care for it, because it sooted up too quickly, by 4k it was filthy...ahh besides it is not a true synthetic, just a streched out paraffin based molecule chain and a buch of additives to meet the wide viscosity jump from 5 to 50...not good!

Fishguy, I use the Mobil 1 15w50 for a couple different reasons. First off, it has the fewest "friction modifiers" of any oil available on the markek (car oils only here) and works best in my motorcycles. Second, it keeps my HOT oil pressure above 2.5bar, and third - experience with it. I've been running the stuff for 7 years, I've done lots of oil analysis tests on it and it's Always come back with reports saying it wants more abuse. I run it for 6k miles in my bikes and 951, 10~12k miles in the 'beater' cars. It's a true synthetic aswell...
There might be better or similar oils out there (amsoil, redline, etc) ~ but this stuff is available locally, cost competitive with those other options, and again - I have a history with it.

I run Q8 5-40W FS - Fully Synth.
Hot idle pressure 1.5 - 2.0, cold above 2.5, hot running about 4 to 4.5.
Had previously experienced Mobile 1 to make sludge on the oil filler lid.

there's so much i don't really know.
i use valvoline synlube 5w-30, mostly because i get free topups at the valvoline place, which i need every 1000 miles or so.
i change religiously at 3000 miles.
i rarely dog it, but have been known to do a 1st thru 4th redline-shift session just for kicks!
where can one find info on what's relly synthetic and how i'm getting duped?

Fishguy,
I think the reason we use 15W-50 is that its the heaviest/thickest/least likely to break down under pressure & temperature synthetic you can get. I believe there is a 20W-50 but it may be regular oil. I will stand corrected by someone if wrong on this. Mobil 1 is relatively easy to find compared to the other high quality synthetics out there in my area at least.
Also of interest--in the owner's manual for my '87, it shows that "multigrade" SAE 15W-40 and 15W-50 covers an ambient temperature range of from about 10 degrees (F) to greater than 100 degrees. "Fuel efficient oils" of SAE 10W-30 and 10W40 cover just about the same range but don't go past 100 (F). Since I don't drive the car when real cold, I'm more concerned about coverage at the upper end.

Mobil 1 15/50 - well worth the price.
For really useful field experiece, read the posts from Doug Hillary in the 928 forums https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...threadid=78582
or do a search under his name and you will find a lot of fascinating threads on this topic. Bottom line as he states, Porsche recommends synthetics and has used it since 1992, that and the change intervals Porsche recommended are fine - 1 year or 12,000 miles!

A quarter million miles on Mobil1 0-40 since the very first oil change and the pressure and consumtion is as the handbook. Changed every six thousand.
Did buy, by mistake, a 4 quart can of mobil1 15-50 so I'm adding it during top-ups just to get rid of it.
Perhaps on the next change I'll opt for the 5-40 - she is getting on a bit now.
You guys are lucky - here in the UK we pay 33 pounds Sterling for a 4 quart container.

I've got Valvoline Racing 20w50 dino stuff in right now. Last time had Mobil1 5w50... haven't decided which one feels better, both find their way out of the tail pipe when I get on it hard

Mobil 1 15-50 in my 944 Race motor. Works great & I change every couple weekends
Valvoline 20-50 racing in 944 Turbo. I am afraid of too many leaks with sythenic oil in this motor.
