Question Different oil...different consumption!!

Okay, here's an interesting change in behaviour in my car. 3000 miles ago I went to my local autoparts store to pick up my standard 20W-50 Castrol Syntec oil for an oil change. Alas, none. I looked around and found the new 15W-50 Mobil 1...so I figured I'd give it a try. Seems to be just fine, in fact my oil consumption has halved! Used to lose a quart/3000 miles...with the Mobil 1 I'm only down half a quart!

Are little gremlins adding little bits of Mobil 1 in the dead of night? Is it more stable in this engine...or am I finally losing my mind?

Steve,
I don't have a good explanation for you, but I have experienced this with multiple cars.

The gremlins are compensated by the extra $1 that you spend on the Mobil. ;-)

In my 951 the rate of consumption of Mobil 1 5W30 is twice that of Mobil 1 15W50. Also, I seem to remember reading somewhere that Castrol Syntec is not a true synthetic oil and that Porsche categorized it with the non-synthetic oils. Anybody recall the details on that?

Well, gee if this continues the Mobil 1 ends up cheaper in the long run!

I read the same info on Syntec...it's almost gotten to religeous war levels...apparently it is based on dino oil that is highly modified, vs Mobil starting with a synthetic base. Many say who cares as long as they equally as slippery and resilient...
