Default Automatic Transmission

Hi All:
I have an opportunity to buy a very clean 89 N/A with 64K.

The kicker is it's an automatic.
How sluggish are these?
Is it possible to economical change over to a manual?
This would be my twice a week commute to and from the airport, and there are plenty of alternates in the fleet so I don't have to depend on it as a daily driver.
I of course will keep the 86 951.
All comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Buy it...but expect to replace the flex damper-$1500 plus install. The car would be a nice pleasant drive to the airport. Eventually you will have the urge to convert.

Yes you can convert to manual with a few parts--see 944Online for info.

Hard to resist low mileage '89.

If you did not have the fleet, I would pass.

Yes if you find a parts car.

Is the flex damper specific to the slushboxes?

jimlam56,

I see the bidding has ended and not met the reserve at $5200.

The lack of bidders indicates that many want the car at the bottom of the Hagarty Insurance Price even with only 64K and the automatic transmission.

Not many owners are interested in an automatic. He should have taken your bid.

All Automatic 944s have the flex damper.

He may relist.

Still watching this one. It's been relisted for the 3rd time.
Does anybody on this forum own an automatic?

I purchased an 84 auto and briefly drove it before parting it out. The experience was very short and that was all I needed.

You could use it for airport commute and later on do something different with it if you so choose to. I thought about getting an auto for the wife since she is so resistant to learn the "fancy clutch science" as she calls it.
