Hey guys, I'm looking for an inexpensive car to use while I get my "S" back into shape. Here's the requirements:
Either a Saab 900 (turbo or not), or a diesel Mercedes of some sort (station wagon preferred), manual tranny is a must. AC doesn't have to work, and the car doesn't have to be the most pristine example of it's type. It has to be somewhere is Central/south Texas and the price has to be around 1K.
I'm about to sell a basket case 924 as well as reap the benefits of graduation money and I need a cheap car to drive around to look for jobs. I don't want a Asian car! I LOVE those old diesel Mercs and I think the station wagons are awesome (I guess I'm a dork for saying that
).
Anyway, let me know if any of you have the above, or know anyone who does, any and all help is greatly appreciated!

This is so weird. I had some serious trouble with my Mercedes 220 Diesel, and then I bought a saab 900 turbo. You can have the benz as you know. It's just missing some vital parts. Engine and such...

Diesel Mercedes cars tend to be some of the longest lasting motors I've ever seen! My girlfriend's father's car has 470,000 miles and it was rebuilt at 325,000
truly reliable means of transportation...downside..70 horsepower....nevertheless..

About 90% of caps / taxi-cars here in Finland are MBs. A friend of mine owns couple of these. Usually he switch them to the new ones after three years and 450000 miles. He told me there is no need to do any repairs if those cars have such a low mileage !

I had a '79 300TD diesel wagon. Automatic. It was the automotive antichrist. I can't count the number of times I had to ride my motorcycle to school in the snow when the bastard wouldn't start. Pulling out into moving traffic involved momentum and a plan.
Parts were expensive as all hell. This is not a cheap car. It is not an exciting car. It is not a cool car. I hate this car.
My '87 Saab 900 Turbo was kinda neat...Not super cheap.
If I were you I'd get an old Jeep. Dirt cheap and a cinch to work on. Don't even have to jack 'em up.
