Default Air Conditioning problems

Hi
I need some advise on why my A/C is not cooling.
I have taken the car to a couple of A/C repair shops, and they check the compressor and find it working ok, then they fill the system with Gas, but it doesn’t cool. I was told that there is a little valve in the passenger side of the car that can be blocked...

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Agustin

Hi Agustin,

First off if you go to 2 different shops and they both fill the system, there must be major leak. You may also have an expansion valve ($25-30) that is no longer working. This should be relatively easy for a A/C shop to diagnose.

IF your system has a leak, the best thing to do is switch to R-131. You will need a new drier ($25-30) and possibly a new expansion valve. You could also have a blocked condenser ($225-330). Less likely source of the leak is the evaporator ($185-190).

But before you replace parts you have to find the leak. The hoses can be rebuilt (50-100) if that is the leak. The condenser could be damaged, leaking and or blocked. If you compressor is good don't let them talk you into a new compressor ($440-575). It is not necessary to change to R-134.

If you have to dump all the freon (gas) out switch to the cheaper R-134. Don't use the A/C until you get the system fixed. You could damage the compressor.

Good luck,

Chuckster
