Got the fuel rail system back together and she started right up

Have not taken her out to see if intermittent stall is still there, but this is a step in the right direction.

Make sure the feed and return hoses are clamped together. On the 83's and possibly the 84's these hoses come up from behind the brake booster and across the top of the intake runner at number 4. Just before the steel section to the pressure dampener the two hose should have a couple of verh large and strong pull ties holding them together. These are the pull ties with the steel insert for holding against the teeth!

This dampens the vibrations between the hoses and the engine and the chassis and keeps the bracket on the pressure regulator from spilting the thin walled fuel rail.

I had seen your post on this issue before. I have looked at mine and it does not have any ties on it.

There are 2 pieces of extra rubber around each hose where it crossess the intake manifold, (between 3 & 4). Is this where the tie wraps should be?

Keeping fingers crossed.

So was it really the rail, or was it the voodoo...

Runs like a fine German watch

It used to stutter a bit when first driven. As if you gave it too much gas, or was starving. Now seems to run perfect from the start.

Small leak on #1 injector @ the engine. Will reseat it.

Mine no looky like that. My inlet for the fuel line is into the end of the fuel rail. I do have one of those rails laying around(seems to be a mid year change) It has the inlet via a "J" shaped brass tube into the regulator

I am going to put a tie wrap on mine "just in case"

NOW FOR THE OTHER NEWS:::

THE DAMN THING DIED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING. JUST AS IT DID BEFORE. HIT A BUMP, LOSE POWER, ENGINE STILL RUNNING, CAN'T REV UP AT ALL, 15 SECONDS LATER, DEAD WITH IDIOT LIGHTS ON. TURN OFF, TURN KEY TO START, FIRES RIGHT UP. THIS TIME I DID IT WHILE COASTING.

WHAT IS UP?????

For those of you new to the situation. I have just replaced:

DME Relay (2)
Coil
Fuel Damper
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Fuel Rail (my fault for screwing it up removing regulator)
New Rotor
New Fuel Filter
Cleaned Grounds above/behind Main fuse panel assembly

It is doing better, on this exact same run (approx 5 miles) last week, it died about 6 times.

Take the DME apart and resolder everything.

Hitting the bump and losing power sure sounds like a loose connection in the DME, since you have already replaced the relay.

Having never taken one apart, I have a couple of questions.

How many boards are inside?

I was planning on getting the modified board with the upgraded/power eprom from F R Wilk.

Would that do it, or is there more boards inside?

Me soldering on an ic board......YIKES.....

I have a similar problem in my 951. I am just about to replace my DME with a rebuilt one. I am going to let someone else do the brain surgery. Vertex has them (www.vertexauto.com). I have also taked to www.systemsc.com who does this sort of thing. He will fix yours for $375. Seems real knowlegable.

Duh, James, lets check your AFM, that is what tells the DME whats up with air intake volume, maybe bad connection or something else, and guess what? I have a spare you can test with.
