Sourcing or Restoring Wiring Harnesses
A couple years back my early 1985 944 suddenly started an electrical wiring fire as I drove it out of my driveway to sell it. Best accident to ever happen to me. So glad I never got rid of it.
Anyways I ran some wire to get it street legal but all this time later I’m getting fed up with the quirky issues involved. I’m wanting to do either a full swap from a donor or perhaps a restoration. I believe most of the damage was behind the dash but I’m wanting to strip out most all of the harnesses to be sure.
Just looking for some insight from the brilliant minds of Rennlist. What are your ideas on sourcing or restoring the harnesses.
Thanks folks

Have you checked out Rhode Island wiring harness? They do beautiful work and it's better than new...concours grade if that helps. I've used them on a project or two in the past and they have been excellent people to do business with...

Is there any interest in top quality new dme and KLR harness's? I'm trying to gauge the market. I work for Lockheed Martin and have the privilege working with some of the best cable/harness people in the industry. Unfortunately the plant we currently work at is moving to the other side of the country and most of the people chose not to follow. I have a few people interested in rebuilding car harnesses to supplement their income. From what they have told me looking at our harnesses they would reuse a few of the connector housings but everything else would be brand new. There work is seriously top notch and they have at least 20 years building harness's for space craft. they were even talking about optional firewall twist locking bulkhead plug to make engine removal with harness possible. Their estimate would be somewhere in the $500 range with your donor harness dme connector.

Just shot them a message. Thanks for the idea bud. Round how much did you pay and what model and year did you have?

Keep in mind there are many harnesses in the car, and a fire "behind the dash" may or may not be the engine harness -- I'd say more likely not on an 85.5+, but am not as familiar with the older cars. I'd try to identify the affected wires/harnesses, and get a replacement from a junked car. You can inspect closely and rebuild/repair any questionable connectors in the comfort of your shop that way (rather than on your back in the car...)
