I think you can. I recall having this discussion with someone and a look at the owner's manual said it was do-able. I could be wrong about that, but I remember being wrong about it requiring high octane. I'd check it out, except I don't feel like going into my garage in my boxers...

Of course, since I have a chip I don't have much of a choice...

My 88 has the octane requirement on a sticker on the underside of the fuel filler door.

87 should have M44/07, 9.7:1 CR (despite what the FAQ says). 87 R+M/2 should work fine. This owner's manual is for the 87 MY:

Ive run 87 for years,with no problem.Stock 85.5 944.

all depends- if you wanna drive without any hesitation- I normally use 93, but if cost is a pinch- use 89 octane...always better with premium.

With gas being around $2/gal and only 10 cents difference between grades, why not get premium? It's a better buy at this price.
