Nice tool ! My hoist would work but I can't get it in right now because I put the car on the lift with the engine end on the inside (towards the inner wall) of the bay, which only leaves me a few feet of clearance before I run into the wall at the end of the bay, not enough room to get the cherry picker style hoist I have in, I was depending on using the lift jack to raise the engine instead of a hoist.

A picture might help. If I had the car turned around towards the entrance, I could bring the hoist in with no problem but I didn't and the entire drive train is out of it now, so turning it around without the help of six strapping lads is out of the question

I suppose I should also admit that if I had the right kind of engine hoist (as you suggest) this wouldn't be an issue ...

I tried cheating the system & cutting corners but in a regular 2.5 944, I found EVERYTHING clarks garage suggests had to be done.

I don't doubt it, in my experience everythig and maybe a little more must be done. I'm just looking for those little anecdotes. The "special tricks" others may have found.

It is true you have to do everything listed on Clark's. It's not a difficult job, just have to fiddle and fuss with the mounts. Since you're not putting OE mounts back in, it'll likely go easier for you. Had to raise the engine a lot higher than I thought I would to get the new mounts in. I also used the jack and plywood under the oil pan trick.

I could see all the bolts from the bottom as well but I had no idea how much torque someone else might have put on them or how frozen they were from age. Sure I could fit a 1/4" ratchet in there but not enough leverage to break things loose. One bolt could only be reached by using the gear wrench and took a bit to crack it loose. Just didn't have the leverage. You may have better luck working while standing up, but some of the spots are quite tight. Even for my long, skinny fingers.

Didn't sound snooty in the slightest. Your comments made me smile. I've been to Australia a number of times and their lingo cracks me up. Put an Aussie and Brit together and listening to them having a conversation is comedy gold.
