In their quests to be the first to "scoop" a prototype story (and Autoweek is one of the worst for this) the spy photographers and journalists sometimes jump the gun on what a car actually is. At first I thought it was kinda' odd that this car wasn't "disguised" more like most prototypes are during development (and Porsche knows that the paparrozzi lurk outside the Weissach track) and if you notice they cover themselves in the article by saying "the best we can tell, this is what it is". I have seen some of their early "proclamations" at Autoweek fizzle and not materialize. But since the new 911's are not sharing headlight assemblies with Boxsters any more, and if you look at this car it definitely has Boxster headlights, then there can be little doubt, right? Or is THAT the disguise? Stay tuned, kids..............

I like it.. looks a lot like a 911, and the air intakes remind me of the new carrera 4.
I would like to see Porsche re-vamp the 951 body and throw a flat six in it. Maybe remove the rear seats and lower the ride height. A car with the looks of the 951, power of a Boxster S, and cornering ability of the 914. Now that's a dream car.

I have a feeling that is a boxster as there isn't really room behind the axle for an engine. Then again doesn't really look to be room before the axle either, but who knows how far it protrudes into the back seat.
I also am guessing that the final boxster will look very little like that. There are a lot of 996 parts on that car, in fact the whole car has a 996 look to it. My guess is that the new Boxster won't look much like the 996 OR the 997. Or at least I hope I should say...

there are so many boxster and 997 "spy" shots out there right now, it's insane. i've seen these same pictures advertised as the new 997...SO take that for what you will
however, these shots look WAY too much like what a 997 COULD look like than what a boxster 987 would look like. i fully believe that porsche has definitely taken to heart what critics of the 986 and early 996 said in regards to them sharing too many aspects. they distanced the two models by the update (last year?), so i think they'll continue to distance the "look" of the two cars nice 'n gradually
IMO, these are possible 997 shots, not a boxster

That "boxster" kinda looks like it has carrera gt headlights, 911T front bumper and something weird going on in the back. I say it's a photoshop, but what do I know?

Fishey.. thats not a rear engine car. the *** end is too small.. look at how far back the rear window goes. there wouldnt be enough room in that space behind the window and the rear to fit an engine.

Someone remember the black prototype they used in the 80s ?
It had a 951 front end but the engine could be put at the rear, the middle or the front.

I'll try to put this to rest... Excellence #117 Feb 2003 pg. 95 features a one page article on the 997 prototype. The car pictured in Excellence is identical to the one in the Autoweek article save for the rear fenders. My guess is that the Autoweek car is a Turbo prototype... Reasons why? Wider, fatter rear fenders and ... what are those large openings just to the rear of the doors??? Nah couldn't be!
