Default Exhaust advice

Hey guys, i have a 86 944 na, and the PO put on what appears to be a cat back "custom" exhaust with a pre muffler and muffler that makes it extremely loud and just about a straight pipe. it doesnt sound bad, but doesnt sound good till about 4k rpms. recently i found the car was spitting soot like sediment out the exhaust, and my research shows that means a bad cat.

so i'm looking for suggestions on a reasonably priced performance exhaust for a light street/mostly tracked 944, preferably something that sounds loud and decent but won't get complaints from anyone in a 100ft area that it makes their ears bleed. also preferably EDIT: headers back or something that hooks up to a free flow cat pretty easily.

spec 944s run straight pipes and they are really, really loud.
honestly...keep the cat if you are taking the car on the street at all.
for a muffler section a stock 944 piece or the 951 piece with the right flange will flow more than you'll need and keep it reasonably quiet.

I run a Hooker 3 inch in/out Aerochamber muffler with Stahl header on my 944 SP2 car ... it passes sound at LCMT and my exaust system is set up as per Karl Poetl's recommendations, that being 2.5 inch outlet from the header,30 inches and then goes to 3 inches all the way to the muffler.

Give him a call at Racer's Edge,he has dyno results on his recommendations.
I don't drive the car on the street and i wear a helmet when i drive it but i've been told by some corner workers that my car sounds stock ... go figure !

Cheers
Phil
