Default Need advice for a newbie

Want to learn more about keeping classic Porsches (911 & 944), and I already bought the "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook". Is there a similar book for 944?

Also, I found this 1987 Porsche Turbo with 104,000 miles with description:
"87 Porsche 944 turbo , 104,000 miles , white with tan leather interior, 2 owners , good condition , brakes and tires in good condition.
Recent service timing belt and water pump , hoses done @ 102,000 miles.
New clutch kit juts replaced (Sachs ) on 01/15
Service records since original owner
Asking $9,000 OBO"

Pictures show a very nicely kept exterior with a decent interior. Is it a fair price?

Any advice would help and thank you so much in advance!

1. don't get scared off by all the carnage you see daily on the forums.

2. on second thought.... 'be afraid, yes, very afraid'

3. do the very best you can.... then a few months later, selling 'er off as scrap.

4. timing belts and interference valves maybe weren't such a great idea.

5. it's good to keep your sense of humor over the 'electricals.'

6. think big four: 1. timing/bs belts/H20 pump/pullies, etc. 2. clutch. 3. headgasket failures. 4. seemingly unsolvable no starts and jogging motors....

7. you will spend a good amount of time and $$$ replacing the crusties/rotting plastic/rubber, etc....

8. which, when added to # 6 + prices that don't even keep up with the c.p.i. = the upside down reality in all it's awesomeness.

9. don't get emotional over the Porsche badge.

10. it's not just a Porsche, it's a God damned 944.

11. if all else fails, maybe think of going v8.

12. thinking out loud can get you in trouble around here. but the laws of physics are cruel....

13. hopped up Scirocco or classic Porsche?

14. hey, have you seen these used 911 prices??

15. "Geebus, for the money I poured in this thing, I coulda had me a mid-90s F-car."

It sounds promising. Find out if the front oil seals were done with the belt. If not you might have to live with some oil leaking from there, or pull the belt again to do the seals.

Are you going to do your own maintenance? That is a big factor when buying one of these. Parts and labour will not be any cheaper than a modern Porsche, and you'll be needing a lot more of both than you would on a newer car. For that reason most people here on RL consider DIY essential on 944s.

Since 2 of the most expensive things are already taken care of, the next thing I'd want to know about would be the suspension. Are there any records for that? Ideally you want to see shocks, strut mounts, bushings, ball joints etc. all being replaced. If they're original they are all likely shot by now.

If you can get copies of the rest of the records, that would be great.

There is a major difference between a 911 and a 944 ... i have one of each and the 944 is definitely more user friendly as a daily driver and i would say that used parts are a lot cheaper too !

Like a lot of people will tell you , buy the best car you can afford as they will all require some investment/maintenance at one point.

Cheers
Phil

I just sold my 3rd after 2 years of part-time restoration. It was good therapy in retirement. Now that it's gone, I'm having post-partem depression. Time to start looking for #4?

Thank you all for the great advice! I will check with the seller regarding the head-gaskets and oil seals, along with the suspension question. Will keep all updated.

thanks

So far sounds like a sorted car, as most of the major maintenance is taken care of.

Last news, the car was bought by another buyer (smarter than me, since he got it) in 2 days after the price went down to 7500. Too bad for me. Next time, I will be smarter and do my homework quickly. Early bird gets the worms....

Sorry to hear, hopefully you'll find another clean one soon.
