Default 944/951 Half Shafts

Ok I'm wondering if someone can help me out...

In November I got my '86 Lux converted to a turbo, It's got an S2 gearbox with a Quaife LSD. When I did the conversion I noticed the '86 Turbo used the same shafts and CV's as the N/A so stuck with the ones I had. I developed a CV knock after some abuse.

So Monday I took it out for a bit of a "break in" after fitting new CV joints. I'd done a bit of reading before hand to see if I could upgrade to the 951 part number but couldn't find anything that said I could for sure - so I stuck with the N/A part number.

I gave the car some abuse just trying to make sure all was well... Which it was for a couple of hours. I then ended the evening with a broken shaft.

I'm now trying to save myself the trouble of having to do this more than once. Is the '88 951 half shaft the same length as the '86 shaft and therefore fit my car?

I've read that it is thicker and uses bigger bearings - hence the reason to upgrade.

If anyone can shed some light on this that would be fantastic as I'm obviously typing in the wrong searches trying to find the answer myself.

Thanks for any help.

For some reason I think the shafts are longer due to the offset change. I will check the parts catalog and let you know

EDIT: part #'s are different from 86 to the 87+ years - this means they are not equal length more than likely.

I was thinking that about the offset too, although I have just found that LR make uprated driveshafts and that they appear to fit all 944 models... I've fired them an e-mail to see what they're answer is.

Thanks!

the axles for the 85.5-91 cars should be same length (for manual transmission), the difference in offset is in the wheel hubs themselves

i believe turbo axle shafts are larger and have different spline count in the CVs, but the hole patterns are the same so you must swap the whole CV shaft assembly

That's exactly what I thought/was hoping for, thanks for that clarification Spencer!

944 332 038 01, Axle Assembly - 1986 Turbo
951 332 038 06, Axle Assembly - 1987+ Turbo

They must have had a change of some sort to change part numbers from a 944.xxx to a 951.xxx

there may well be but again the entire assemblies are interchangeable, but perhaps the sub parts (CV joints, shaft, clips etc) are different.

Shafts are not greater in diameter, as far as I am aware. They have different splines and the CVs have larger ***** and weigh less that the early design. They also stand up better to track use.

Kevin,
How could the late shafts weigh less if they are the same diameter but far longer and with bigger bearings?

I've bought a pair of 951 shafts now so I can let you know the differences when they arrive

If anyone is interested this is the photo of my old shaft:
