944 Maintenance
Okay, I've been hearing some stories on how 944 (na's nevertheless) are costing people up to $3000US ($4200CA)/year (on average) to upkeep, and this is a complete turn-off for me. The car I have now costs below $500CA/year (on average) to maintain, but its brand new, so I can understand having to pay more for an older car, and one whose parts are infamously more costly. Still I don't see how a car could cost 4200/year unless its breaking down every week, or the clutch is being replaced annually.
Someone care to explain?

That's on the high end. I've spent abuot $1200 and that's not all mandatory stuff. But a better number on average.
Some parts are very exspensive, but if you get a decent model it wont cost you that much. And it's not every singel year. Some years are worse than others.

I doubt most cars cost $4k every year. However, $2k can be a reasonable average. Most people seem to have shops handle the bigger jobs instead of doing the labor themselves (I'm one) and the labor is very expensive. Over half the job price will be labor (Clutches, head work, etc). It all depends on what needs to be done.
I've had my car for the years. Two months after buying it, I put $3k into belt, hoses, front end seal, tires, oil leaks and brakes.
It all depends on the car and how much you drive it.
The N/A cars are typically less than the turbos but still are not cheap.
If you can't spend $2k per year, you probalby won't be able properly maintain the car. Definately lean to do some of the work yourself. I'm learning more all the time.

I'm lucky because theres a local Porsche mechanic whose been working on them for 30 years and he actually charges no more than your typical mechanic. So hopefully that will help (if I get a 944).

I bought my 85.5 NA in 1998 and put $3400 in it until I sold it this year. A lot of the money was put into cosmetic stuff. When you have one of these cars you want everything to work perfectly so you end up spending money on little things that you normally wouldn't do on a normal car.
Heck, I rarely change oil on my daily driver, but I'll put new wipers on the 944 twice a year and I hardly ever drive in the rain!

Daily driver, drive her normal/soft for the most part, but do get on her fairly often as well. Mostly just taking off ramps faster than I should

Excluding repairing the pre-existing problems when I first bought my 944 in early 2000, and the cost of the head gasket (which was about $1.4k), my average has been under $1k/year. In fact, it hasn't even been in the shop since last August when I had the head gasket replaced! <knocks on wood> All that's gone wrong since then was a leaking fuel line, a dead wiper relay and a sunroof microswitch.
The car is typically driven about 8k miles per year.
In any event, I'm comfortable saying that a typical 944 will run about $1-1.5k per year. The $3k US /year figures probably come from people who either bought cars that need a lot of work or don't have much of a clue and assume that since it's a Porsche, it's gotta be expensive. (and yes, I've run into people like that...)

It should be noted, however, that I did pay a premium for a very clean and documented car and have been pretty rabid about taking care of it. Hell, as is the case with any of my cars, if something doesn't work right, the car is pulled from the road until I fix it...
