Wink Trans dampener complete, wow, that was a fun job

Yup it's done, runs good. Two small problems, one, I cracked the plastic plug on the O2 wire, I think it will be OK tho. Two, I think I kinda pulled the wire loose on one of the reference sensors. I had a start problem, wiggled the wire on the first ref sensor and it started fine, had the same problem one more time too. Guess I know what I'm doing.

An automatic right? You did get the clip back on the end of the drive shaft?

This keeps the drive shaft from pushing the torq converter into the trans.

Yup, all back and no noise or vibrations. Actually it's alot smoother that ever before while we've had it.

Where did you wind up getting the damper?

Do you have a side by side picture with the old unit and the new one?

Ok, I got the dampener form Vertex for $589. I don't have a pic right now, but the center wa completely ripped out and the rubber was torn into two peices, 4 parts total, outside, center, and two chunks of rubber.
Dlefko, I'd be there, but two things, 1 I'll find out wed if I get my license back, 2 it's about 1000 miles each way, sorry man. Yup, that's me, swapping a 87 951 motor into a 88 NA. All of the later cars should be a direct swap if you get all of the turbo equipment needed.

BTW, the no start/hard start problem was just the reference sensor. I didn't disconnect either plug, but the first one was about half way plugged in. lol, I went out to show mom what wires to wiggle if she had a problem with it starting and I saw the plug about to fall off. I figured I'd be puttting a new sensor in this week. No problems since.

Oh, did I mention why it was soooo fun. Damn grease hole! I've been working on my car using the same shirt for about 3 months and it's white. I work on this for a week and a half and ruined 3 shirts. Yeah, I did alot of cleaning on my car tho. Between fighting rain and bugs, it only took about 4 short evenings. But a total of about a week and a half.

Auto Trans Dampener need replacing when you smell rubber burning, chunks of rubber coming out of the starter inspection hole and it sounds like a can of bolts rolling around, oh, and a serious vibration from the engine bay.... I thought the whole damn thing **** the sheets!!

Yep- Its not pretty.
Good Job Andy!!

We had a smell of hot rubber, then a slight knock, then it sounded like rod bearings.
