Default Occasional "!" light

On my 1991 944S2, the red dash light with the "!" flickers on occasionally recently. It seems to be mostly when I'm on the highway and just slightly decrease the accelerator pressure.

The car seems fine. O2 sensor getting old maybe? Other possibilities?

thanks,
Bryan

"!" light is linked to lots of things (I believe) including oil pressure. How do your oil pressures look 'on throttle' on the highway, and what does the oil pressure do when you let off the accelerator?

Is your oil topped off? Mine likes to light up when the oil level is midway between the marks on the dipstick...

Also check brake fluid level. Dunno if there's any sort of warning for coolant...

Mine does the same...a little flicker occasionally when I first start. I've noticed that when it happens, the voltage is down to about 12 on the gauge....after a block or two of driving it ramps up to 14 and the light goes off. Check your grounds and make sure your alternator belt is tight. I think my alternator is just dying a slow death.

Bryan,

Look at the dash closely when the ! goes on. There will be another indicator lit with it. Sound like you may a a low fluid (oil/brake).

Mine comes on for all that, but it's always accompanied by a brake, oil, etc. light.
I only see it by itself when it wants me to upshift.
Are you at the redline when this happens?

Okay - ridiculous suggestion - but doesn't the "!" light come on when the parking brake is on? In my former 951 - the parking brake switch contacts were dirty - so the light would stay on, even with the handle all the way off/down. Cleaned contacts sorted it out in a flash.

I'm generally at around 3000 to 3500rpms when it comes on. Oil pressures are above 5 at speed and about 2.25 when warm and at idle. Since cleaning out the radiator this spring the temperature needle stays perfectly horizontal when warm. Charging is generally in the middle, but I honestly don't check it as often.

I'll try to catch another light on when it flickers and will check fluids this weekend.

Thanks for the help, everyone! Have a great weekend.

Mine stays on and has since i have had the car? I am not sure what it is. I thought maybe the rear brake cable might have some adjustment to it not allowing it to completely go down. In my 87 na 944, I replaced the carpet and that light stayed on? Finally I pressed down on my e-brake handle until the light went off? so it turned out to be linked to my e-brake and the fact that the car thought it was engaged sightly?

Mine used to do that. The brake fluid was right at minimum, so hitting the brakes would drop the level to where the light would come on.
