Default Newbie looking for some info on this 944

Hey everyone,

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1986 Porsche 944, but there's been a lot of work done to it in the past and I'm hoping I could get some help identifying what this car exactly is, what's been done, and how much it's worth. I don't have any experience with Porsches but maybe that'll change soon

The car apparently had $50k worth of work done on it by Powerhaus in Scottsdale, AZ in March 2008. I have not seen the car, I've only seen pictures which I'll attach to this post. It has some sort of 2.8L engine with a turbocharger.

I know this isn't a lot to go on, but I figure I might give it a shot because it doesn't sound like this is a common 944.

The car was traded in to a CarMax, so I don't think I'd be able to contact the previous owner to ask any questions. I can try to ask the guys at CarMax but they'll only be able to tell me what they see and notice.

I know it's a longshot, but I'll try to post more info as I get it.

Thanks everyone!

Will

Turbo motor in a N/A car. Hope the upgraded the transaxle, brakes and spindles too. Risky purchase. But if the price is right and you can do your own wrenching, I say go for it.

If the engine is 2.8L you want much more details than just that.

You get 2.8 by adding stroke to 2.5 100mm engine with custom pistons (higher position of wrist pin) and 3.0 crankshaft.

You want to know if complete turbo drivetrain + gearbox was installed or just the engine.

If the work was done 15 years ago, it could easily be $50k to do that and if it runs since than it was done well.

Got a few more details but not too much...

It's a Powerhaus engine stroked to 2.8, K29 turbo, MAF conversion, turbo trans with LSD, got the turbo brakes and bilstein suspension, maybe more. They have the paperwork for most, though not all of the work, and it seems like a very thorough job. Work may have actually been done in 2005?

I wouldn't be paying anything close to $50k, that's just how much the previous owner put in it. Sounds like it runs fine.

What's something like this worth nowadays?

Thanks for your help everyone!

Whats the asking price on this? and do they offer any kind of warranty? Given interior condition I'd say $8k ?

EDIT : $7.5k tops.

If its built by powerhaus, it should be good. not sure why the N/A body because the airflow to the intercooler wouldn't be as good

At that price sounds like a steal, feel sorry for whoever dropped the $50k into it.

Dang that's the same car all right, thanks for posting that CL ad. That gives this car more of a back story....guess the previous owner tried to sell it for a month, then got fed up waiting and traded it in at CarMax. It really helps ground the car in reality, instead of just 'that crazy car that just showed up at CarMax one day'.

Edit: next step is probably to have them ship it to the CarMax near me or travel there and check it out. Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it!
Edit2: sounds like the odometer stopped working, but the carfax are clean
