Default How do I know if I have a late water pump style

1986 944 N/A

Water pump leaking. I don't know if it had ever been replaced. How do I tell if I need the update kit?

I did the belts a year ago and decided to pass on the pump... grrr I knew I should have done it then.

Late style has a belt rub guard, a shiny piece of metal bolted to it to separate the timing belt sides.
Also likely has a block of plate on the front.

Here is a picture from the Arnworx site that shows what V2 is referring to:

So is this early or late?

Is late pump 2.7/3.0 pump or that is the third version?

Looks like I got lucky
Found the pump and checked the number on it, it appears to be genuine 3.0 pump. It also has 2.7L stamped on it. It is strange though that this was taken off M44/52 turbo S engine, until now I lived under impression that 3.0 pump doesn't fit on 2.5 block..

It was changed less than 200 km before the car was totaled.

It is getting really rare to see the old style pump anymore. In addition to what the guys said, the old pumps use the smaller metal timing belt idle roller, versus the update pump that used the larger plastic idle roller. If you are replacing, you will want to change to the updated newer pump as you can't get the older style pump anymore.
