Default 924 2.0 n/a Drive line/Clutch noise? help needed!

Hello all,

When the clutch is depressed on my 1980 924 2.0 N/A there is a terrible noise which sounds like an out of balance bearing. It is loud enough that people walking down the street spin around to look because it sounds like Ive hit something!

It doesn't happen all the time but most of the time, When the clutch is pressed to go in to gear or in neutral, It stops when the clutch is fully out in gear or neutral. It also happens when the clutch is half out (like when you are crawling in traffic or parking)

I thought it could be the clutch throw out bearing but it is so loud that I am worried it is more serious. Any ideas what it could be? The clutch doesn't seem to operate the same all of the time and sometimes it can be hard to select gears due to the clutch dragging. I am planning on taking the car off the road and replacing the clutch asap but is there anything else I should be checking too?

Thanks in advance,

Michael.

Thanks Dougs951S.

I thought that may be the issue, also my clutch is dragging badly, I can't buy a new clutch until next payday and although the car is staying on the driveway I need to move it every now and again to get other cars in and out, Is there any way I can tension the cable for now to reduce the clutch drag? I understand the clutch is on its last legs .

Thanks,

Michael.

This link should bring you up to speed on your clutch. http://www.924.org/techsection/ClutchReplacement.htm

Also changing the clutch is a 8-10 hour job and not a simple one either and the part is not cheap. Not trying to discourage you but it might take a couple of paychex to get it sorted out.
