Is K&N cone filter worth it on an NA ?
I have seen a K&N cone filter with an adapter kit that attaches to your MAF box. Is this worth it for the na 944? Aside from giving me more noise, would I be able to see a difference in performance ?
How about the drop-in type ?

Hotly debated topic... search archives. I have yet to see objective data that confirms whether or how much HP/performance is increased. There is a "perceived" improvement in power and performance. I've used both the flat and the cone K&N's. At full song, particularly with headers, the NA sounds a lot sweeter and actually seems stronger and faster. Without a controlled dyno test, I would say it's just a matter of taste.

i bought a K&N cone filter and already have a K&N panel filter in my stock airbox. Switching to the cone filter made no difference at all other than sound. Depending on the bracket and mount you buy, you may need to fabricate a bracket to hold the filter off the alternator. If you need, i can give you an idea of how to make a real ghetto (but working) one for about 2 dollars and a dremel (or something to cut metal with). I ended up only using the cone filter for about 3 days, then i decided to just change back to the stock airbox.

I have the cone kit you're referring too. For the money I paid for it, it was well worth it. There is definately a little bit more kick in the @$$ on takeoff. And the sound. My God the sound. In the slightly higher RPM range it sounds really mean. Plus having the stock air box out lets me see down into the engine compartment which is a real plus.

Interesting M758... one would assume racers would opt for the weight savings, if nothing else. Is there another reason for not running the cone or a less "restrictive" filter?

Weight savings is minimal. What 1-2lbs? Got to the bathroom before tha race and you can take care of that
Dyno,
Most all of the 944-spec cars in Az have been across a dyno. Data has shown that the cone does not provide and increase in HP. Remember also that the stock air box is a true cold air induction that gets air from a high pressure zone (in the fender)
Bottom line is that nobody finds a performance advantage from it or shall we say nobody is losing performance by staying stock.
FYI... If there is a 5hp gain from a K&N cone then EVERYONE in 944-spec land would using them. Heck even with 2-3 hp they would be everywhere.

My PO had a cone setup when I got the car, I upgraded it to a K&N filter, then found that it put me in Street Prepared in SCCA, so I found an airbox and dropped in a Mahle air filter. Made no difference as far as I can tell.

A friend of mine who used to work at a respectable P-car place (who shall remain nameless) said that they were going to come up with a cone filter for my 944 if I was interested. I asked him if it'd make a difference. He said "It'll sound better, but that's about it."
Needless to say, I still have my stock airbox...
