Question Routing E-brake thru trailing arm?

Has anyone here ever replaced their trailing arms?

I purchased a set of '87 951 arms, to replace my stock '86 arms, figuring that $90 spent on a 'new' set of arms was about as cheap as having the exploded bearing pressed out of my exisiting one.

After much pain and knucklebusting (thanks to JeremyH for the hand in getting started), I have the new arms installed and ready for CV's. But I am having a hard time getting the cable for the e-brake reconnected. It was tough to get off, and seemingly impossible to reattach. Is there a trick to this?

It routes into the fromt of the arm ok, and I can almost get enough slack to push the pin back in...arghhh!

Marc,

Are the 87 arms the same dimensions as the 86? For some reason I thought they were different and had different axle lengths? I could be wrong.

Yeah, they match up...the CV's are slightly thicker, since Porsche changed them to 'be able to handle more power' as I was told. (Oh please let my info be correct, otherwise I gotta order more crap from paragon...)

How are you man? I been out of town for a while, and havent heard from you in a while, lol?

I wonder if the different offset of these arms is making the difference?

No, my problem is the lenght of the ebrake cable, it comes out in the same spot, I had to pry the pin out with the tip of a screwdriver on the first one too...it is just a everything seems to be right at the same spot.

Does anyone know exactly how much difference there is in the offsets? The only real difference I can see is in the design/shape of the hub, it does appear to be sitting a bit farther out in the wheel well. I guess I better start planning to order some new half shaft/CV sets...

I just went out and test fit the CV's again, and they seem to be ok...but this damn cable is making me crazy...might try hooking the end of it with wire and pulling hard to get that 1/2" I need. There is a bit of play in the cable, it has a big spring on the end...

M758 - That's kind of what I was asking. I thought the 87 arms has a different offset than the 86 arms to compensate for the ABS stuff but he says they match up.

Water - I've been pretty busy lately. I've done the AC on about 6 951's in the last few weeks and I seem to average about 4 or 5 cars in my garage a weekend. I did some work on Bob's car and it's running great. I need to start charging for this crap. Anyway, I've been getting my car ready for the track season (only five weeks away!) and am going on vacation for a week this weekend. I think my wife is cheating on me because she bought me another $1,000 worth of tools. Her new boyfriend has really good taste in tools so I don't mind. I'm trying to buy another 951 and will know more this week. Double check your info on the trailing arm. I was sure the 87 trailing arms were different. Give me a call when you get a chance. BTW, I have a set of chips if your interested.

I was just out matching up all my crap on the arms, and as far as I can tell, the offset difference is mainly in the hub itself...

the 86 hub is farily flat, lays almost up against the arm...the new hub is slighlty conical, dished outwards as it were. And now I become curious if the ebrake pads will line up with the rotor...

I may just need to go spend a wad of cash and get more stuff to clutter up the garage. And it will, too, I am sure. Both clutter and be a wad, lol...

Ok, here is what I found...

I am either gonna have to take my old trailing arm down to Don Jackson, and have the bearing replaced, or purchase new rotors, since the old rotors dont even come close to being deep enough to reach the ebrake pads. This seems to be the major difference in the arms, the amount of offset in the hub itself.

I will have you know my 'equipment' is counterclockwise, as opposed to your odd and distasteful clockwise stuff.

Omg, I almost gagged just thinking about that one. (Bad childhood memories, lol)

Hey Marc,

I'm going to be over at Don Jackson's today @ about 4:15. I didn't think you could use those trailing arms on your car without new brakes, rotors, wheels, and axles. That sucks.

Ack! I dont mind new rotors, but brakes and wheels too?

My wheels fit fine, or so it seems, and the axles seemed ok too, but maybe I will just meet you over there and have the bearing redone...
