Default 924 turbo

Today I was approached by a gentleman that is selling a 924 turbo. The car is in good shape 7.5/10 but when you start it, it will run for a few seconds and die. He told me it is a bad turbo which I don't believe is the case because the turbo does nothing on start up. I could be mistaken but if not does anyone know what this could be? He is selling it at a very good price but said he is selling it as is and does not want anyone messing with it to try and figure out what the problem is. Also it idles fine for the few seconds then shuts off, almost like you turned the key off, it doesn't jerk or seem like it is starving for fuel. I am not sure of the year I believe it is an 85

If the price is very, very low, then consider it.

Otherwise, RUN AWAY!

You are correct, sound like a CIS (continuous injection system) problem; auxiliary air valve, warm-up regulator, poor air to fuel ratio, etc...

What are you considering a good price?

no turbo was produced in 85

I have an 80 924 turbo S (sport package available only in 1980) and I love it, fun car.
I'm not an expert with CIS but few guys here would be able to help and you should get some pics and join "924.org", forum specialized on 924 with few really good guys that can help you.
Important question, how long the car has been sitting?
And one last point, there are no cheap Porsche. The lower the purchase price, the higher the bills to get it back on the road will be.

Repairing the fuel system can get expensive especially if it's been sitting.
Sounds like it may be running on the cold start valve only?

CIS explained below.

The price is $1,000 which I think is a good price. I have a 951 and want to buy this one as a father son project. After completion I want to give it to my son for his first car. From what I have read on the site the 924/931 has more problems then say the 951, so I just want to have an idea of what is a head of me. What are the most common problems I would want to remedy before handing it over to my boy. The car is rust free but has faded paint, the interior is in really good condition. He told me it would cost 3 or 4k for a new turbo. I am not sure where he got that price from but one thing is for sure he knows very little about a turbo. This car is just down the road from me so it wouldn't cost anything to get it home. He actually seen my 951 pulled in the driveway and asked if I would be interested in his 931.

The car has been sitting for 6 years but is in a building with concrete floors. I am assuming the gaskets, belts, tires, etc. would need to be replaced.

It could be like the one I recently got, it was simply the Warm Up Regulator (actually more of a fuel regulator) I rebuilt it and it it works fine.

its really not that complicated.
Dont listen to these morons.

could be a fuel pump/filter

See if you can rev it a little when it runs, If so, then you are good to go.

See if he will let you atleast pull out a fuel injector and see if it sprays (you have to push down on the CIS meter plate (connected to the snorkle next to the air cleaner)
youll have to jumper the fuel pump under the dash.

It really doesnt sound too bad. see if you can get it for less, but either way, it should be relatively simple fix.

I like what you've done to your car! Very cool. I also never knew about the S trim. Thanks!

Correct sir. The 931 is an interference engine so timing belt is key. It's also cheap and relatively easy to do so that's a plus.
There are a few NLA parts for these but no real show stoppers.

Here is some required reading.

Maybe its just the fuel pump relay...they are supposed to run for a short amount of time and then turn off the pump if they dont get signal from the coil that the engine is runing.
Buy it or post the details on 924board.org as someone there will buy it.
The 924 turbos are getting very rare and expensive.
