Default Not so quick to start

Was catching up with an old friend the other day. He mentioned how his 90's ca 911 would start the second you turned the ignition. Got me to wondering about why my S2 has to grind several cycles out before it catches to start. It usually kicks off around 7-8-9 cycles. It always starts and runs well, but seems like it has to wait on fuel. I know there's a check valve near the fuel pump, somewhere. Would that be the culprit, or is it normal for the S2 series to have to "turn over" 8 or so times before it starts?

It could well be the check valve but it's more likely to be this (pic). Make sure the shields are fitted to your speed and ref sensors.

Hey, MAGK, appreciate the reply on this. Yeah, I've seen that diagram before, but thx for sharing. Since mine is a '90 S2, I think that problem was well-resolved by then, and I don't get early detonation, either. On the S2, one of those sensors (not sure if its the reference or the speed--I think its the reference) is actually re-positioned at the front of the cam shaft, too.

Maybe other S2 owners can enlighten me as to how many cranks it takes to get their cars take to start...perhaps the whole thing is a non-issue. I'm just thinking I might be stressing the starter, since it's a daily driver, with several daily starts.

7-8 turns seems very long, my S2 takes 3-4 max.

I'm with you with the check valve, if the rail is empty, it would take some time to start. When it's been running for a while and you stop and start it again right away, how long does it take then?

Sysgen - helps a little bit, 5-6 cranks in that case.

I'd measure fuel pressure / fuel pressure leakdown first.

you'll get it running someday....

and when you do, just say those magic words;

because the sooner you learn this.... the better:

"it's not just a car.... it's not '80 prehistoric automotive wizardry....

it's life in f_cking BOSCH!!"

Godspeed.

OD, are you as much of a problem child in real life as you appear to be online?

An easy way to see if it's the check valve is to jumper your DME relay, then try to start the car. If it starts faster, then the check valve is bad.

I have a similar issue on my car (89T). I'm not sure how many times it cranks before starting but it's longer than any other car I've driven, including 80s 911s. I have tested the fuel pressure leakdown, and it seems fine. Also, starting again after driving and stopping doesn't seem significantly quicker.

I don't know if this sheds any light on it, but once I had trouble starting due to some unrelated issue - I can't quite remember but let's say I had something unplugged or whatever - when I fixed that problem and turned the key again, it fired up *instantly*. Presumably that was due to all the extra fuel in the cylinder from the previous attempt. It would be nice if it would start like that every time.

i wasn't trying to upset the op,

but rather call attention to the insanity of barely being able to run these ignition systems properly.

if it was an old '80s BGN, we'd be able to make light of something like this....

but, when half a car forum is; i can't start my god damn car, i realize this is a very serious matter.

of course the other half of the forum is....... Geebus, it hurts to even say it.

since i happen to be having one at the current moment myself.

let's be clear: the problem child in the room ISN'T calling out the insanity.... it's effing BOSCH.
