Default High HP Potential?

i've been looking for a project car, and i cant decide between a mk3 supra, a 300zx tt and a 951/944 turbo.

Hitting high hp numbers in the supra and z are not a hard thing to do, but i am unfamiliar with the potential of the turbo 944's.

just wondering how hard it is to crank 400hp out of one of these.

The MarkIV Supra is the easiest to hit 400 hp with. Basically 3 mods and you are there. The Z is a little tougher, but still doable without tremendous amounts of money and work.

The 951 can hit 400 hp as well, but might be the toughest most expensive of them all. To reach 400 hp you'd probably want to have a new intake, turbo, exhaust, injectors, MAF or MAP kit, wastegate, bov, etc.

A few more things that the other cars, but still quite streetable. Several people here have 400+ hp and didn't go broke doing it.

It's not too difficult. This engine has a lot of potential.
But what do you want out of the car? The 951 was designed to do something that's quite foreign to those other two: corner amazingly well.
If you want to go to the dragstrip and beat up camaros, get the supra. You'll never find a better quarter-mile/dollar ratio. If you want to drive on a track, get the 951.

well, its going to be a daily driver once next summer comes...

i want to to three things with it.
-be able to hang with some of the larger v8's (13 second trans-ams, 14 second mustangs)
-haul *** on the back roads with the local 240sx's and the like
-look nice while doing it.

If you put enough time into it (or take it to a place like powerhaus), you can get an 11 second quarter-mile. A stock turbo will do about 14s. A stock turboS will do mid 13s.
But Porsches are not designed for the drag strip. They're desigend for the track.
Every model Porsche has ever built (even the pepper) can beat 240s on the curves...well, maybe not the tractors.

Powerhaus.com can build you a 951 that will push 500+hp w/ 500+ tq. Someone on the boards has one. Still not made to drag. The 944 may cost you more in insurance and maintenance as well. Personally i think its hilarious that people say that they mod their cars and they can run 14 seconds. And its a V8 !! I have friends with z28s that now run 13 and 14 after work. ???, we do that stock and with little work! You want performance, mod a 951 and strip it. Light weight, agile, and fast as sh*t. Just remember, if you do drag, or try to do burnouts etc..., a clutch job will be needed very soon with the 944, and its expensive to do a Porsche clutch. I would go with the supra. I've seen insane examples. Cheaper to mod than a 944 as well. Then again...how many supras have the history of the 944 & co. to back them up?

I would take a 944 turbo over a supra anyday. Everyone owns a supra, why not be unique and get yourself a 951?

951's have potential, but look at spending some time and money.

944 turbo's are incredibly agile on the track. They are not designed for the qtr mile ... but in stock form ... and at 15 yrs old ... they will give a good run if not surpass the other 2 cars. my .02.

on a side note:how much does a supra cost?and look how much a 951 cost.ive seen mk3s go for 20k plus,a decent condition 951 will cost about 5-6k put the extra 14k into the 951 and youve got some serious power to the black top!

The people who got in on last gen Supra TTs are laughing too. Who could have really predicted the cars would end up the panacea of most tuners as a bulletproof car up to 550-600hp while keep 99% of the Toyota reliability with what most would consider moderate and relatively inexpensive modfications at best. Their resale value has been stunning.

Im all for steering you to a 951, but I have to be honest, I wouldnt necesarily downplay the handling of a Supra Twin Turbo. They are big heavy cars, but a lot of power and a lot of wide rubber hides a lot of weaknesses. A couple suspension changes and I know I wouldnt want to dare one. Maybe Im just gutless but you never know whats under the hood of some schmuck in the car next to you.

But as Porsche owner, I feel I have nothing to prove either. You wont regret getting a 951 I can guarantee.

A 951 and Supra Twin Turbo should never be mentioned in the same sentence as a Camaro. Thats is just bad bad bad. You could drive a Supra TT 10 years for the price it would cost you to drive a Camaro for two. Cost of ownership. Thats why many BMWs are cheaper cars than Buick Centurys and Olds Auroras after 5 years of ownership.
