High HP Potential?

I don't really like the Z first off, my buddie had a modded MK3 and it felt like I was driving a truck. I didn't like the heavy disconnected feel of it. I like my 944 NA better with half the power, I beleive my buddie does too. He just got a 89 944 NA. If you want straightline and dyno #s, don't buy a P-car. The weight differences help with the slightly lower HP and it will be a nice car for corners too. It would take work to get either of the others to get a car like a stock 944 NA, a turbo is better than that. Just my thoughts

mk3 supras are FUNNNN!! but not to work on. Have an extra headgasket ready. I had mine up to about 280hp bf i sold it. Supras are not track cars, they are too heavy. If you like going around 160mph no problem, then get the supra, if you like going 0-60 and cornering, then get the 951. i would say the z is more of a track car,but even worse to work on.

WHat!!! wait, a truck - f u !!!! THE supra was the best riding/running car ive ever had, w/ minimal problems. Only bad thing about the suspension on that was it liked to go straight in hard corners/ with the stock wheels.

sure handling is fun, but its only half of it.

sure handling is fun, but its only half. yup, go get a crapmero, leave the good cars to us, thanks.
most here prefer using cars for what they're meant for, a porsche is not for you.

Race Car
If you want to dragin something that handles, get a gsxr 1100. It will out do anything you can afford in a car. A yamaha V-max could do 0 to 60 in less than 2 seconds if my memory serves me right. If you want to do it in a car, get an older vette engine with aluminum heads and with minimal dollars, make it 400+ hp and put it in a 944, which will give you most of the handling and all the power. If you want even faster, get nitrous since the chevy motors are good for that kind of thrashing. I have enough 944s to spare one for this project but still enjoy my 3 951s and other n/a 944s. I figure its better than sending that shell to the scrap metal yard like many of my 944s have gone. The mk3 supra with targa top rattles because when you turn, the chasis flexes. They are fairly fast but do require maintenance like anything else. The one I drove felt like a boat bone stock around the turns. I can find mk3 turbo supras here for less than what I can pick up a late 944 n/a for but my personal preference is that I wouldn't drive one as a daily driver. It weights almost as much as my e32 bmw 735 and does not feel as sturdy. I work on all my cars and have spare parts so I don't mind maintenance and repairs.
Ultimately, high potential cheap hp and no handling = american v8 with nitrous

Without a doubt you're looking at the thousands. Drop a nice LT1 in there and do some modifications to the engine. Plus you have to upgrade the brakes and suspension to do it too. This is provided you do all the labor yourself which I'm sure you will. I forget the address to the website where that guy has a 355 in his S2. That basically in a nutshell explains what can be accomplished with these cars.

The biggest thing keeping the 951 from making big HP seems to be RPM, but is that really a problem? check out this chart...
at 6k RPM, the 1000HP supra is just putting down 500, torque doesn't peak until redline, and at 4k RPM, it's making way way less torque then a nicely tuned 951, barely above 100 ft/lb
Big HP 951 makes its peak torque at 4k... over 400ft/lb
Big HP sure sounds nice and sexy, but really, is 1000HP worth having nothing at all at 4k RPM?

Three Wheelin'
I have a friend who has a '91 MK3 supra pushing around 500HP and it feels nice. Another friend has a 300zx with quite a few mods. Even though they can both leave me snorting dust on a straight road I bet I can get them nervous on the twisties.
FWIW, I think you'd be better off with a Supra.

In all fairness the dyno chart for the Supra was done with an intercooler pipe that blew off and no tuning(I just put in a base prgram into the AEM).Look at the run numbers. The first five were done at 15 psi and it laid down a hefty 750 at the wheels on pump gas at 8000 rpms. The last three runs were done at 30 psi but the intercoler pipe kept blowing off at 7000 rpms. This motor is designed to make peak power at 8000 rpms! If we can keep the pipe on and do a little tuning, we can get a much better power curve. Ofcourse this engine was not designed for a broad flat power curve like the 951.It was desinged to make some astronomical peak number to break a record.
The real question is........ how does the 951 feel at speeds over 200 mph? LOL. I think it is safe to say not as stable as the Supra
