Front Speakers (again)

Front Speakers (again)
A Google search shows this has been done to death in the past across various forums, but the results I found were a good few years old now and many of the recommendations are no longer available.
Can anyone recommend current 4x6" speakers for the front of a 944?
I know the mounting depth cannot exceed 1 - 3/4".
I just tried a set of used Blaupunkt PCxb462's after reading someone say they drop right in...
Drop right in they do - except the tweeter is raised above the rest of the speaker, thus preventing the grill from going back on without some kind of modification
The others I were looking at were the Pioneer GS4644R, with a mounting depth of 1 - 5/8".
Seem ideal, but that rubberized ring at the top of the speaker I think puts a stop to my plans, the top of the speaker needs to be more or less flush with the mounting points for the grille to fit.
So I ask the learned members of Rennlist...
Do you know of a 4x6" speaker that meets both depth and flush requirements, that doesn't require any replacement or modification of the grill set up?
This nice-to-have upgrade has now turned into a must-have since the foam on my OEM speakers crumbled away while I was taking them out
Thanks all...

I had ALPINE SXE-4625S on mine some time ago , perfect fit with stock grills but i didn't like the sound , very lacking in mid-bass .
Ps: in the rear i had polk audio db461 , absolutely great sounding speakers , unfortunately never tested them in the front.

I did't do anything , they went right in without any problems , the grill went on ok ,maybe it had a bit of a bulge but i don't remember ,it was 3-4 years ago.
Maybe they were sps-406 ,i'm not 100% sure , what i'm sure is that they were alpine and the fit was perfect.
Why don't you get late style grilles and fit a better speaker ??

I'm pretty **** about keeping the car as stock as possible... I guess the later grills wouldn't hurt though.
I may go down that route, but I want to exhaust all possibilities with the standard first...

PORSCHE 944 924 S 968 6 X 4 KENWOOD KFC-HQ46C DOOR SPEAKERS if you can find these or KFC-4675C if you can't. The mounting depth is also 1 5/8". http://www.kenwood.com/usa/car/speakers/kfc-4675c/

I was looking at these . Can't say if they fit or not though.

So from what I can tell both the KFC-4675C and the Blaupunkt GTx 462 DE will both fit from a mounting depth perspective... however they will protrude out, meaning my standard non-deep (1986) grill won't work.
The Kenwoods have been known to come with their own grills, and they're big enough to cover the opening in the door panel. However the ones I'm finding for sale are grill-less.
The Blaupunkts do come with their own grill - however it's oval and there will be some exposure of the inside of the door going with those over the factory grills. Trying to figure out in my head if there's a way I can work around that with some black tape and still make it look decent.
I've also started looking for the later OEM deeper grills, but of course they're NLA and I can't find them...

I remember having the same problem a few years ago. I made a "spacer" out of 3/8" plywood in the shape of the speaker/grill then I wrapped the outside with electrical tape. Mounting the grill on top of that was a pain but it looks great and does not really interfere with door closure.

Oh, I'm horrible at that kind of custom fabrication so that's a non-starter for me!
The more I think about it, the more I am tempted to go with those GTX 462's and use the grill that comes with them, being creative with some electrical tape around the gaps in the corners it will leave behind.
I can get them locally and return them hassle-free, so I may roll the dice for the purposes of research and see where I end up.
In the interests of originality (not that it matters), but I'd prefer Blaupunkt.

The Kenwoods will flush mount and the original Pcar grills will fit flush as well. Having said that, my buddies' 86 944 has a foam gasket under the original grill to fill the gap between the non-flush mounting speakers and the door panel.

Don't let the tweeter issue scare you. I had the same issue and decided to fix it by cutting a hole in the grill where the tweeter is and letting it protrude through the hole. It doesn't look unsightly at all and it works like a charm. Even looks pretty cool.

Thanks for all the replies.
I've decided to go ahead with those Blaupunkts and the grille that comes with them.
I've also decided to go with the Blaupunkt PC's for the rear. I'll look into grille options and may promote those to the front...
