Gas smell and fuel gauge is erratic
Hi
I'm new to Porsche having purchased a 924S last year. I noticed a few weeks ago that my fuel gauge doesn't seem to be accurate (it bounces around quite a bit)and now I've developed a gasoline smell both when driving and when parked, although it's not particularly strong. I don't see any leaks. In my experience with most any car, it's usually something quite simple. Where should I start?
Thanks in advance

I would start by changing out the gasket on the sending unit. I have a 968, but if you take the rear carpet out, you'll find a cover for the sending unit, unscrew that, and you'll find a few electrical wires and you can remove it. Your tank is metal, mine is plastic, but I image it is very similar. That took care of 95% of the smell on my car.
Here's a procedure for the 968 with lots of pictures:

If you fill the tank and gas flows down around the muffler area you have the very common cracks on the top of the gas tank. I didn't notice a gas smell on my 924S, only the leak the first time I filled it up. The transmission has to be removed to get to the gas tank, which sounds scary but with a transmission jack it isn't that difficult, though a bit of a project. And once you have the tranny out, is your clutch OK? You're already part way there...
