DIY Alignment
Thinking of stringing my 944 NA, so I can do some rear toe adjustments.
I'm badly toed out (0.4 degrees per side) despite being maxed out in the toe in position on the right side. The mounting ears on the torsion bar carrier appear to be a bit bent. If I were to massage them back onto shape with a hammer, would that be a safety concern? If anything, they would slightly work harden, if they don't crack.
Back to the strings...
What's a good way to brace the galvanized conduit on the back end of the car?
I was originally going to use a set of jackstands with a string going between them. I don't think I can set the string equal distance from front and rear center cap, because track might be different. Car is an 86 with 15 inch Fuchs, so the rears are 10.6 et, and front are 23 et.

How critical is a level surface? I'm working on gravel, so I'll try leveling it out by putting each wheel on a concrete block, and using tiles as leveling shims.

what condition are your bushings in? hard to keep any sort of alignment spec if the rubbers are shot.
one thing to consider - with the torsion bar suspension on the 944, toe is related to camber and wheel travel through its up/down cycle. where is your ride height at?

Maybe this will help you:
I you want the car to be pretty darn level. A water level is good for this.
Also, you might want to look at these, I use them to make toe checks/adjustments at the track:

Took some measurements of the ride height when I was at a gas station.
So this is with a full tank, but no spare, or rear seat. Also I have deleted the power steering and AC, but I doubt my small weight savings would have really changed ride height.
front 19.5 inches (495mm)
range is 506-546
rear 21 inches (533mm)
range is 502-542
Looks like the rear height is within spec, and the front is a bit low, probably due to the original upper strut mounts. I have some new (vw fox) ones, but have yet to install them.
Bushings in the rear, are probably original. I haven't changed them, so probably no one else has either. Oddly enough, the spring plate bushings look to still be concentric.
The water level is a great idea.
