Default 951 Trans cooler pump question

Can the diff side plate be changed out for an NA one to remove the cooler pump mechanism? I'm pretty sure my bore is messed up and am planning an alternative cooling system. I've got a spare NA trans lying around that I can make this possible with. Thanks!

Yes, you can swap it out. You do need to reshim the differential carrier bearings as part of the swap, and I would not assume you can simply reinstall the current shims in the new cover plate. You also have to replace (or plug) the end cover, that is the rear aluminum cover into which the other end of the loop inserts.

Make sure the NA cover is not an early one that went in with the large o-ring. Otherwise it's the right part.

Thanks for the heads up! The other cover is from an early trans, so I guess it's a no go.

Would you recommend tapping the pump bore and adding a fitting to adapt to different style cooler?

Thanks for laying some knowledge on me, I appreciate it.

I don't know the size of the bore, but, with the cover off the transmission, I see no reason you can't use an NPT fitting that's a little larger than the hole.

I put my own trans cooler on an NA tranny, and I drilled and tapped the end cap (while it was off the transmission).

Great! Exactly my thinking. Where did you mount your cooler?

In the block-off plate for the spare tire well.
