Default Late Fuel Rail on Early Car

Is there any reason I couldn't put a late fuel rail onto an early car? I know that with stock fuel lines I will have to still use an early FPR, but it seems like that should still mount to the rail and the lines will reach. I hate how the FPR and damper are installed on the early rail and I wouldn't mind having a rail that is a few years newer. I'd love to go with a Lindsey billet rail but just can't justify the cost at this point. If someone made an OEM replacement rail that would be awesome.

I don't know if there's enough room for the fuel lines... you can always try! Otherwise it should fit (e.g. injector spacing and mounting points).

What do you mean by room? You mean if they're long enough? Now that I think about it, the supply line might not be long enough, or have an appropriate connection. The return line would definitely be okay.

I have an early and a late rail for sale, both have FPR and dampener. I can take some measurements/pictures if you want to make sure a late rail will work. I'm pretty sure the injectors are different (or at least the signals are), but those are swappable obviously.

Don't worry about it. After thinking about it some more I am pretty sure that the fuel supply line connection is wrong for the late rail. My supply line is male because the early rail has a female hardline welded onto the end. The late rail uses the male bottom connection on the damper as the input, which would obviously be incompatible.

How much for your early rail, shipped to MD? I would request that you make sure the damper and FPR retaining nuts, and the damper end cap, are not seized. That is the reason I am looking at a replacement.

Does anyone have a parts diagram for the 84-85.1 fuel rail setup? The Porsche parts lookup has information for the 82-83 setup, and the 85.5+ is the new style rail. The 84-85.1 setup is like the 82-83 except there is a cap on the bottom of the damper and the high pressure fuel hose attaches to a hardline welded to the end of the fuel rail, using a different fitting than anything else I see in the fuel system.

Okay, it looks like my supply hose has a male 16 x 1.5mm globe fitting, just like the base of the fuel damper. To use a late style fuel rail, I could either make a pigtail with two of these connectors to jumper between the existing fuel line and the damper, or replace the whole supply hose back to the hardline and use just one of the connectors to connect to the damper.

Am I crazy or does this all sound reasonable? If so, still got that late rail, sausagehacker?

Yessir. Yours for $50 shipped, pulled from a daily driven car. Perfect chance to go to SS braided lines
