Default Need manual steering shaft length.

i'm ordering u-joints an a shaft from burgeon to build a new manual steering shaft and I need specs for the length.

I found a pic online from a rennlist member showing the specs of the power steering shaft.

Is the manual shaft just one inch longer overall? I bought a used manual shaft recently (was told it was manual) and I measured it and it is 15 inches long like the power shaft so I think the guy that gave it to me sold me a power shaft.

anyways can anyone confirm the length between the joints and overall length, I don't' want to take mine out until I get a new shaft as it's my daily driver

thanks.

also burgeon told me I need to grind down the spline on the rack and steering column so the set screws can sit. do you actually have to do this? I don't want to grind the splines on my rack and column.

Personally, I wouldn't trust my steering connection (read as "life") to a set screw. It's just not a positive enough mechanical interface.

I wonder if someone can come up with shaft design but easy installation?!

That would be wonderful.

is the borgeson joint a splined type or a D-shaft type on the shaft?

is the pinchbolt not available?

no splined but apparently you need to grind down the splines on your steering rack and steering column for the set screws. that's what they told me on the phone.
I don't really want to do this.

i'm wondering if you could use the the flat spots already on the shaft for the set screws. that would probably cause the steering wheel to be crooked, and maybe you can just straighten out the steering wheel?

problem is other than burgeon I have no other option for a new steering shaft. there are rebuilt ones being sold but they have tack welds which I don't like either.

yeah same I don't like the set screws either. the borgeson parts look like they are high quality but I don't like the set screw design.

I did a search online and found some people who use borgeson steering shafts have had the set screws cook loose and back out all the time.

what other options do I have? I need a new manual steering shaft and there don't seem to be any good options out there. another option is the 944online ones that are sleeved and welded. and again I don't want welding.

^ 944online sells ones like that but some have said that welding could cause cracks in the metal and cause a future failure and I think it's illegal to use welded steering components in some areas (according to borgeson website).

thanks again Jon. It's strange how you can get pretty much any other part for a 944 except the steering shafts. I'm sure most 944s now all have steering shafts that have lots of play.
