Like replacing the cam chain tensioner, I love a repair that will last the LIFE of the car! Thanks for the help--now I have to find a good non-silicone sealer to put that plastic cap back on once I am finished modding the unit!

I still need to scrape off the crap job I did with the clear sealant and put a better looking beed around that. But seeing as it's upside down and I'm probably the only one that can see it I still find it nessarcary to make a clean looking AFM!

Upside down? Do I have to remove the AFM from the car to do this adjustment?

You'll have to remove it.

Also before I cracked it open I hooked a voltmeter up to it as shown in the shop manuals on CD for our cars to confirm it was faulty.

I can get that for you when I get home later. But basicly it's right next to where all the trouble codes are listed.

D'oh! Any tips on removing the AFM? Does it bolt in/out, or are there secrets to doing it right?

It just bolts right in. You can get it out in about 1 minute. You'll see where connects.

Take off the hose clamp, unplug the wire connector, remove the 4 bolts at the front and a couple bolts on the bracket that holds it on. It's not hard, you can do it Andy.

I'll give it a shot hopefully before the weekend--the Koni Yellow's and new control arms are going in on Friday!! Want a car that runs on all cylinders this weekend!

I cleaned the engine last month...no super pressure water or anything...but could I have got water into the AFM, causing damage?? The car ran fine when I got it. I guess I can check that when I take off the AMF and peek inside?

It's possible you got some water somewhere. But my AFM was sealed up pretty good.

If you've got any issues let me know or post in this thread. We'll get ya fixed up!

I did some research on this a few years ago for my S2. I opened my AFM up and found one of the arms had a fracture. The 944S uses the exact same p/n as for the S2. Trying fixing your existing one. If you can get it working 90% it'll buy you some time to hunt down a used 944S AFM. Expect to pay $70+ ! Measure the output voltage.

Here's the two pages in the shop manual. If you have the CD the file will be Vol1A-Engine.pdf.

This is all for an error code 1121.

Hope this helps Andy.

i still havent attempted to crack mine open.. dunno why, but im sort of just dealing with the stumbling idle.. it goes away once the car is warm (i think?) .. i guess im kind of afraid of damaging the afm...

let me know how it works out Andy...

Some Fords and Mazdas through 1992 used the same style AFM, there might be a compatible one under the hood of a Probe in some junkyard somewhere also.
