Default Weird temperature gauge behaviour

97 944 NA - Today I noticed when I pulled in to work after driving about 30 minutes, that my temperature gauge was reading higher than normal, not running hot but well above the normal halfway point where it usually sits. I sat parked and watched it for a minute and after a minute or so, it came back down to more of a normal reading. when I turned the car off, the gauge pegged at max temp. I have never seen that before. I started the car again and and watched for a minute (temp in an elevated but normal range) and turned it off again, needle pegged again. I repeated this 3-4 more times and it finally dropped down to the normal minimum temp reading when I turned it off. A while back I replaced the DME temp sensor but not the gauge sensor. Does this sound like a gauge sensor issue or something else? -Thanks

Or a pressure loss, replace the expansion tank cap.
