Default Any one try this k26 turbo rebuild kit?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/944-Porsche-...-/251513577539

says it only works on the 1989 which is the k26/#8 vs the k26/#6 that most of us have.

any special tools required?

must be a reason why they charge $500-650 for rebuilt...

Just me, but I would leave it up to someone familiar with the process. Are you planning to do the work and the have a shop check balance?

I rebuilt mine myself about 6 months ago. It was not terrible, just had a lot of end play. I heard bad things about the kits on ebay, I got my kit from these guys: http://gpopshop.com/. I called and talked to them, they hooked me up with the right kit for about $120 and comes with instructions. It was not really to tough either, if you are mechanically strong. This was my first turbo too. Mine still works great and has 2,700 miles on it now, and counting. I have the turbo enhancer on it too and it will pull about 15 lbs of boost.

They aren't hard to rebuild and if you're careful you can save the need to rebalance the assembly if you are careful with the disassembly and reassembly.

However, if you're concerned, many places will balance a turbo for you, check the local listings for diesel repair shops or you can send it to a turbo shop for a quick balance for a reasonable cost.

What you're paying for with a turbo rebuild is shop time and labor. Why pay for that when you can pull it apart, clean it, replace the worn parts and seals? If you pull it apart and find it is hosed completely, then you're only out a little time and you can track down another turbo to freshen up rather than get the "call"

most important question: will it stop the oil leaking and blowing all over the intake / intercooler / throttle body...

It did on mine. Mine was visibly decreasing the mosquito population prior to the rebuild.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to do a leak down on the engine to make sure it isn't a ring or piston issue.

mine has a hiccup like the fuel is temporarily cut off then blasts out a black puff of smoke... kinda james bond like... but really not nice. will likely order from gpopshop. they answer emails and give advise... gotta be better than ebay site that doesn't allow you to send emails...
