Default Can you change the engine to firewall coolant hoses with the engine in place?

944 turbo - I have the intake, exhaust manifolds, crossover pipe, turbo, AOS and a few other pieces removed. Will be pulling the starter soon as well.

I can only see one water hose which goes from the hard pipe above the exhaust manifolds to the firewall, pretty sure I can get at that one.

I'm told there are two more hoses, but I can't even see them yet with all the wiring and vacuum stuff in the way.

Is it possible to replace these without pulling the engine? I have replacement hoses as part of my silicone hose kit, and wondering how much other stuff has to come off to get to them.

Thank you.

Two hoses on passenger firewall. One right under intake near center of firewall coming out of cylinder head going to the heater valve.

Thanks Kev, I see the heater valve now. Hopefully this won't be too difficult afterall.

It's a pain to reach in there, but it is doable. On the early cars the hose clamps are easily reachable from the passenger footwell, so don't think you have to do everything from the engine bay. Took me a while to figure that one out.

Hi, A WYIT is to go ahead and change out the Heater Control Valve. It is much easier while the Intake Manifold is removed. I would not replace with a used part.

Cheers,
Larry

Replace the plastic heater control valve with a metal one while you're in there.

Here is the old thread about it. https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...an-happen.html

+1 for replacing the heater control valve. Be aware that when it fails, it will just burst into 2 pieces with no warning and dump all your coolant, and possibly get some into the clutch through the inspection hole in the bellhousing!

Sounds like a plan. If I go for the metal audi part, is it there any temperature controlled aspect to this or does the vacuum line connect to the heater controls and simply open or close the valve?

So glad you guys pointed this out too, I will be sure to cover the inspection hole before I remove the hoses.

Another option is to relocate the heater control valve so it's not directly over the bell housing / clutch assembly.

It is just controlled by the vacuum line, no temperature sensing or anything.
